<p>The cocotte originated in France where this casserole dish was designed to cook chicken dishes: in fact, the word "cocotte" itself is the French word for "little hen". Since then, however, the cocotte casserole dish has been used to make a wide variety of other dishes including soups, stews and ragouts. Beginners can use them as they try their hand at tasty oven-baked dishes and professional French chefs can't do without them for gratins or delicate soufflés. This particular cocotte is grey, adding a hint of elegance when presenting food at the table, round and has a diameter of 24 cm. As well as being aesthetically pleasing, cast-iron is an excellent heat retainer and is good at distributing heat equally, characteristics which are enforced by Staub's special matte black enamel. This enamel also helps preserve a food's unique flavour. Since a cocotte retains heat well, meat and vegetables can be cooked gently whilst preserving both flavour and nutritional content. It is therefore perfect for cooking healthy meals. Its specially designed lid also releases condensation at regular intervals, keeping meat wonderfully succulent. I love love love Staub Dutch ovens! I have them in different sizes and colors. They perform well when cooking and are in my opinion the alpha of longevity cookware. It also looks nice setting on your stove. Very well made enamel cast iron. I've had other brands that chip quickly but none of the Staub pieces I have are chipped. Even the bakeware/casserole dishes still looks good after many years.

4qt Dutch Oven

This is a beautiful round cocotte.  My color choices were slim and I reluctantly chose the Graphite Grey because I needed a new round dutch oven.  It took awhile to arrive, which was fine.  The color is beautiful and I'm so pleased.  It is very heavy for a 4 qt pot.  I don't think a larger one would work on my induction range so I am grateful for both the size and the color.  It is perfect for me.

Wonderful purchase

Staub consistently delivers fantastic cast iron products. The 4-qt cocotte is a great middleground between our large ones for a feast and our 2.75-qt (other brand) for cooking sides or for single/couples dishes. The graphite gray has a nice tone that complements the dark blue one we have.

Great addition to the collection!

I already own two Staub products and have been so happy.  When I received the Cocotte I was very pleased.  I also gave one to a friend as a gift and he loved it!  Great bakeware at a great price.  Thank you.

Great Staub Cocotte purchase

This 4qt Cocotte is perfect for me since I am alone. I purchased the Graphite Grey and it is beautiful. I have not use this purchase yet, however, I have other Staub Cocotte's and I love the quality.

Love the Size

I've been waiting a few years to purchase a Dutch oven and the one I liked on sale. Immediately made soup for dinner. Weight is perfect and love the cooking properties. This will complete our carbon steel & cooking pots/pans  .

Finally purchased the perfect Dutch oven

It is the perfect size for braising for two people. I just got it and the next day did a small brisket and it was wonderful. I don't think this pot will ever get put away.

Wonderful pot!

Perfect in every way. Excellent quality and why I have purchased again and love Staub products. The 4 qt is a perfect size for me because I cook for 2-3 people.

I already have a 5 Qt. but found it too big for everyday meals for 2-3 people. I got this and it is the perfect size to make marinara sauce, stews and such!

Perfect everyday pot

So disappointed! After using this cocotte only twice (to prepare soups) I noticed that the interior started to lose its coating and to show signs of discoloration. When I used this cocotte the food did not stick to it so it was easy to clean with warm water, a gentle soap and a soft sponge as recommended by the manifacturer.
I don't see the point of investing so much money in a pot that performs just like cheaper cast iron pots.
