In all my years of putting together furniture, toys, etc, this was by far the most pleasant experience I have ever had. The pieces arrived with no damage, and no items were missing. The instructions were easy to read, and everything was an exact fit. I did not experience a single problem in putting it together. Excellent quality for the price. Definitely a keeper!

Initially had problems due to the delivery that were not related to Wal-Mart (or Sauder) but to FedEx having left the item out in the rain. Wal-Mart customer service was quick to offer solutions to the rain damaged item and its return. The replacement was shipped, received, and in use by the time I received the return receipt. Kudos to Wal-Mart for excellent customer service!

The Secretary desk is compact and has many great design features. Putting the desk together took about 8 hours, but I did take my time. The directions were concise and easy to follow requiring only a Phillips head screwdriver and a hammer. End results were a solid desk with sleek modern finish--not solid black but black with brown/espresso color. Lovely.

What I recommend should they ever redesign the item are two things: one, that the power bar shelf be about 2 inches lower to hide the plugs from power supplies, lamps, etc.; two, that the screw heads from the knobs on the front panel be countersunk so that the writing/working surface is completely flat.

I am quite pleased with the item and have seen desks with a very similar appearance priced two to three times what I paid for this one. This desk looks great, feels solid, and I anticipate it will give me years of service.

Great product very reasonably priced

We first put the secretary together with the drawer and shelf, then we decided to take them out in order to our 23" Dell Computer Inspiron One in...it fits perfectly!!! It is so nice to be able to close the doors and not see the computer or the printer below.

Looks like it's been in the house forever.

Nice addition to our home.

I really like this desk. I had it delivered but still had to drag it up 3 flights of stairs to my apt. It is VERY heavy. I think the box said 137 pounds.
I love the way it looks but wish there was more storage. I bought it for my living room so that I could close it up and hide my desk mess. Love that part about it.
Assembly was a pain! Many moving parts.
I would reccomend this to anyone that needs a nice looking desk and functionality.

Nice, heavy desk

I brought this piece to finish off my home office.  I already had 3 other from the collection.  It was easy to assemble especially if you have assembled Sauder furniture before.  It did take about 3 hours but that's because there are a lot of details.  The finished product looks great.  I have 4 pieces in my home office from this collection and it looks like a more expensive collection.    Just be patient with the assembly  and you will love this item.

Nice Piece

The PRO: hides a potentially messy office. My 21" iMac fits perfectly with room to spare at the side (we didn't install the small shelves inside the opening). Lots of space underneath too. Our printer sits underneath with the paper tray extended and the paper ready to go. When we want to print something, all we do is open the door underneath. 
In our case, we needed two cabinets side-by-side, so we didn't want to buy cabinets with doors as doors in the middle would clash, if open. So fold-down cabinets worked best!
Ship-to-store delivery was fine; it helps that I could track it via internet for a week, but I hope more Walmart items will offer free 2-day-shipping like other companies are doing it.

The CON: comes in a huge and heavy pack (see photo) and best to be transported by dolly. Assembly took a long time although the instructions were clear. We ordered two of these cabinets and it took 7 hrs for the first cabinet and 5 hrs for the other, assembled by one handy person. 
Because there are so many knobs on the front (twice as much because of two cabinets), it looks a bit strange. One day I may buy some nicer knobs for it.
Fingerprints are IMMEDIATELY and very prominently seen, BUT also easy to wipe away. On the outside, I first wiped with a paper towel with some 409 cleaner, but now just use a dry eyeglass cloth. I guess 409 cleaner might be a bit too harsh for the thin layer of black. 
The computer gets a bit warm inside when turned on, so we cut a larger square out of the backing which is really just thin carton. You cannot see this because the computer hides it. 
When the cabinet is open, there are just two hinges that hold up the "table". I don't feel very confident in putting all my upper weight on it, like I would do on a regular office table.
As someone else pointed out, the "table" isn't smooth, but there are six screw heads sticking out (from the knobs on the other side). Not a big deal, but I can see where it could bother someone.

END THOUGHT: For the low price, its a good piece that does meet its purpose. Feels a bit cheap ("Ikea-ish") but again, what to expect for that low price? At least now nobody sees the messy paperwork!

Serves its purpose but has some cons too!

We bought this Secretary as a place to put the laptop when we weren't using it. It's a lovely piece of furniture and looks great in our living room. If you move your laptop cord a lot, it does get annoying trying to replug it into the built in power strip. Unlike other reviewers, we have had no problems with anything peeling.

Looks great - very solid - great value!

The desk designed is beautiful. I was surprised the material was peeling before I even could put it together. The top door would peel even ore every time u use it as a desk. Do not spend money on this. I would have been better off buying some from craiglist and paint it black.

Not real wood, door peeled already

the desk was hard to put together, it had abc to put together and a lot of them had nothing on them. i called to see what the pieces were and the guy said we are closing and would not be open till tomorrow. finally we got it together and it is wobbles not  very sturdy. very dissappointed

After my husband put this together, we noticed a ton of imperfections in the details. The edges of the partical board were peeling...poor quality.
Too time consuming putting it together, tearing it apart, and shipping back. Will end up giving it to the kids sooner than later.
Very disappointing.
