Just Get This Lens

It's a solidly built and attractive looking lens. It gives clear and crisp photos. there's nothing to dislike about this lens, at least on the surface.  There are few lenses available for the RF-S platform, in my case a Canon R7. At this point it's competing essentially with the kit 18-47 or the kit 18-150. I have the 18-150. That's a crisp and clear lens as well. It doesn't have the speed of the Sigma at 2.8 but it does have image stabilization and three times the range. Is having 2.8 worth not having those two features, all else being equal?

Not to me it's not. It's a good lens but in my mind it just doesn't compete. When Sigma comes out with a lens that has IS and a longer range, call me. Meanwhile, this unit doesn't make a convincing case for the purchase price. If I didn't already have the kit lens I might have thought differently but dang it, if it can't convincingly beat the kit lens what's the point?

Nice lens but that's not enough

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Initially I was very pleased with this lens... Compact, versatile, and well priced.  BUT... After 2 mo. of light use, I just discovered that on my Canon R8 it only shoots at 9  Megapixels!  Shame on me, I should have discovered this sooner (I would have returned it), but did not. The R8 is a mirrorless, full frame.  It does knowingly shoot at a 1.6 cropped (APSC) and I actually like that.  Nowhere in the specs does it provide any Megapixel warning.

Canon R8... Beware that megapixels are low.
