Smithsonian Folkways Recordings is the nonprofit record label of the Smithsonian Institution the national museum of the United States. They are dedicated to supporting cultural diversity and increased understanding among peoples through the documentation preservation and dissemination of sound. Folkways Records believe that musical and cultural diversity contributes to the vitality and quality of life throughout the world. Through the dissemination of audio recordings and educational materials Folkways Records seek to strengthen people s engagement with their own cultural heritage and to enhance their awareness and appreciation of the cultural heritage of others. Our mission is the legacy of Moses Asch who founded Folkways Records in 1948 to document ''people s music '' spoken word instruction and sounds from around the world. The Smithsonian acquired Folkways from the Asch estate in 1987 and Smithsonian Folkways Recordings has continued the Folkways commitment to cultural diversity education increased understanding and lively engagement with the world of sound. Octavio Corvalan was born in Santiago del Estero Argentina in 1923. After secondary school in Santiago he went to Tucuman to study Philosophy and Letters graduating in 1944. His great interest in folklore stems from the rural life he lived as a child. He learned to play the guitar while still in secondary school and later studied linguistics in order to track down the influence of indigenous languages on the Spanish mother tongue. These studies led to a fellowship at the University of Washington. He has been performing as a folk singer in personal appearances and on the radio for many years in many cities of his country and has lectured and written essays and articles on folk poetry and music. Octavio Corvalan nació en Santiago del Estero Argentina en 1923. Despues de estudiar la secundaria en Santiago se marchó a Tucuman a estudiar Filosofia y Letras graduandose en 1944. Su gran interes en el folclor surgió de su niñez vivida en el campo. Aprendió a tocar la guitarra durante la secundaria y posteriormente estudió lingüistica para trazar la influencia de las lenguas indigenas en el castellano. Estos estudios lo llevaron a obtener una beca en University of Washington. Corvalan ha aparecido como interprete tanto en persona como en la radio por muchos años en varias ciudades de su pais y ha dado conferencias y escrito varios ensayos y articulos sobre música y poesia popular.
