<p>Soft Cinema: Navigating the Database (The MIT Press) explores the concept of cinema suited for the digital age, where devices like the Palm Pilot and technologies such as automatic surveillance and consumer profiling influence media. Created by Lev Manovich, a leading thinker in media arts and digital culture, together with new media artist Andreas Kratky, this project includes contributions from notable figures in music, architecture, information visualization, and media design. The DVD features three films that demonstrate the possibilities of soft cinema, where custom software and human choices combine to produce endlessly variable films without repeating the same sequences or narratives. The films include Mission to Earth, a science fiction allegory about immigrant identity using multi-frame layouts; Absences, a black and white narrative edited through algorithms inspired by surveillance technology; and Texas, a database narrative assembling visuals, sounds, and characters from multiple databases. Each viewing generates a unique version, showcasing the innovative approach of Soft Cinema: Navigating the Database (The MIT Press).</p>
