I am quite impressed with this product. Only because most cams are from the 90s we all use our phones now. So its nice to have something from the balst of our past. But its very modern and sleek and affordable for what you can do with it. Its handheld and you can move around with it too. The micro chip you can get at 64 gigs and extra batter packs is recommended if your doing big projects. After having my Sony HD-CX405 video cam nearly a month, I have not stopped using it. The interface is extraordinary. The mobility feature makes using it easy in any situation. I use it to film many events, indoor and outdoor waterever the lighting situation you have to deal with, this handy cam has you covered. 
I use it to film my church services, the results are astounding in the picture quality. The ability to zoom in and out are smooth and with professional results. And taking still photos are easy and with high quality results.
I only wish I had bought one sooner

Having bought this wonderful Handycam a month ago I was staggered that such a small, lightweight item could take such great, clear videos. For thirty years of using camcorders that download via leads I was impressed by the simplicity of the modern system. No heavy battery and no large moving storage unit. A really wonderful machine.

Wonderful video camera

Having had a high quality camcorder for some years I decided I wanted one that recorded to a memory card rather than mini tapes. I must admit that I thought it would be as simple as putting the card in a card reader as I do with my DSLR camera. I was a little disturbed at having to use a Sony site to download but after a short session of familiarisation I found it quite easy. The quality of the pictures and sound is very good and the handycam fits very easily into a pocket. With a little more time and practice I believe I will really enjoy my purchase.

small but powerful

I spent some time researching SONY video cameras to find one that fulfilled the need to record design work in progress, as an aid to evaluating modifications to provide feedback for later reference. This model was chosen for its compact design, intuitive user interface, and plenty of access to modify its settings. This is the first video camera I have found able to correctly enable viewing of OLED displays through its fine-tuned exposure control, without flare and desaturated colour....sharp focus and high-resolution at very low light levels is maintained at high quality. The 'Play Memories' software did not work with MacOS X 10.13.6, but this may be due to my anti-virus protection software. However, this is not an issue, since when plugged into the Mac by USB cable, the camera appears as a drive on the desktop, and the video files are easily accessible for copying across to a permanent hard drive....which I prefer. Various clips were assembled and then captioned in Adobe Premiere, to provide an archival record of this stage of progress in the current project. This camera will be very useful in a whole range of current and future research work.

A valuable research support tool....

Instead of renting a Video Camera I decided to buy a Sony Camcorder and everyone agrees that was an Excellent Decision!

easy to work, little problems on the menu otherwise very functional

I spent a long time researching - I'm talking months - before deciding which handycam to buy. I was looking for a quality high definition performance within my tight budget. And I wanted the option of manual control over certain camera settings such as shutter, aperture, focus and white balance to give me the freedom to capture specific creative results outside the range of the auto point-and-shoot and in-built scene selection features.

I chose the Sony CX405 because its specification gives me everything I want, including the means of easily capturing the action in MP4 format for display on the Internet.

For me, image performance is paramount. A camera can have all the features in the world but if the final on-screen image is lacking in sharpness, definition, or realistic colour rendering it would be a complete non-starter.

At the time of writing this, I've completed my initial tests with the CX405 using a selection of the wide range of video resolution settings it offers and I have to say the Zeiss Tessar lens and Sony's Exmor R CMOS sensor deliver an image clarity which is, to say the least, outstandingly good.

The CX405 records primarily in the .m2ts format which isn't likely to be properly understood by any existing movie software you have, so I strongly recommend you download Sony's free Play Memories Home software which handles .m2ts video files with ease and allows you to use them in a variety of ways.

Although the CX405 will record in MP4 format if you wish using its dual-record facility, the Play Memories Home software also provides the means of easily converting the default high quality .m2ts format files into MP4 format - which is useful if you've chosen to shoot only in the .m2ts format and later decide you'd like the clip in MP4 format for use on the Internet.

It also means you can import the MP4 file into your existing movie software and manipulate it and its sound track in any way you wish.

In short, in my experience the CX405 produces great results with the fully auto point-and-shoot setting and provides the means of getting really creative using the optional manual controls.

Impressive Performance

I feel I have been cheated by the reviews - the sound is rubbish and some say it's brilliant! Such a lie. I used it to interview people and you have to max the TV/PC volume to hear it, the camcorder is generally ok and easy to use, but this is a massive let down. And you can't even attached a mic.

If you want it for anything closeup, then this is a winner. 

I bought this because it can film for a longer period than my max of 30 minute canon camera, but if you 'pause' enough it will be fine - I wish I used my camera instead and certainly will do so in the future.

I bought the camera to film a Village stage play, The first attempt the battery ran out half way through the second act. On the second attempt the the charging lead was used and the whole play (two hours long) captured successfully . The picture quality is reasonable but slow to focus and the camera was slow to respond to changes in light levels.Changing the camera settings seems to require a lot of practise as the menus are small and difficult to interpret and the selection button very fiddly. Downloading to Play Memories Home (PMH) took a long time and editing the film was not easy using PMH. A cut and paste facility on PMH would be very helpful. Adding captions also took time to master. Saving the film after editing took nearly two hours. I am sure this camera would be great for taking short clips.

Slightly Disappointing

Have bought this camera for a once in a lifetime family trip to Australia. All went well - camera easy to use- compact and captured some great family moments. Then disaster. Had specifically bought a Sony micro sd card 32gb and the camera said I had another 52 minutes recording time left. Had a meeting with an old school friend and the following day on our hotel roof pool area and recorded as normal with no obvious issues. But when I went to playback, all the meeting video and pool top area were not on the card. Took it to a specialised camera shop in Sydney. They confirmed the camera was fine and that there was 10gb left on the card but could not explain why it did not record, as I had not touched any editing buttons. Had to but a new 32gb card for this evenings family meeting, but all that with my old school friend who I will not be seeing again is lost.Not what I expected from a Sony product.
