When I bought the Sony Bravia X90J and paired it with my PlayStation 5, I didn't just want a good picture—I wanted a true next-gen experience. I wanted something that felt like the future. At first, it wasn't quite that. It was solid, sure—but not game-changing. Over the last couple of years though, with updates and firmware rollouts, the experience has matured into something seriously impressive.

The Sony Bravia X90J – Starts Good, Grows Great

Out of the box, the X90J gave me what I expected from a Sony mid-tier flagship: a clean, sharp 4K picture, solid HDR, and that rich Sony color palette. The blacks weren't OLED-level, but with full-array local dimming, the contrast still popped, especially in dark game scenes or cinematic sequences.

Where it really started to shine was after a few software updates. Sony added better motion handling, improved the VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) support, and tightened the latency. Suddenly, this wasn't just a “good” TV—it became a legit gaming display. For PS5 titles like Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, or Horizon Forbidden West, the visuals feel immersive, fluid, and deep.

The Google TV interface has gotten more stable too. It was a little clunky at launch, but now it's fast, intuitive, and packed with content. You can tell Sony put effort into long-term support.

Standouts:
	•	Excellent 4K HDR with Dolby Vision
	•	HDMI 2.1 with 4K 120Hz, VRR, ALLM
	•	Smart features that actually feel useful
	•	Color accuracy and contrast above average for the price
	•	Built for PS5 (it even auto-calibrates settings)

Minor Downsides:
	•	Limited viewing angles (this is a VA panel)
	•	Only two HDMI 2.1 ports
	•	Internal speakers are serviceable but lack real punch—definitely add a soundbar

The PlayStation 5 – Finally Growing Into Itself

When I got the PS5, it was fast, quiet, and futuristic—but a little light on content. Now, a few years in, it's grown into its power. With massive titles and updated system software, it feels like a full platform.

Games load lightning fast thanks to the SSD, and the DualSense controller is still one of the most immersive features ever added to a console. The adaptive triggers and haptic feedback turn average games into visceral experiences.

And when paired with the Bravia X90J? It's like they're speaking the same language. The “Perfect for PS5” branding isn't just marketing—there are real perks, like automatic tone mapping and low-latency modes that kick in when the PS5 detects the Bravia.

What Works:
	•	Instant load times and buttery performance
	•	Graphical fidelity that really shows off in 4K HDR
	•	DualSense controller is next-level
	•	Game library is finally stacked: exclusives like Demon's Souls, Returnal, Final Fantasy XVI, and more
	•	Constant system improvements and new features like Discord integration and VRR support

What Could Be Better:
	•	Storage fills fast, especially with 100GB+ games
	•	Some AAA titles still locked at 30fps without VRR support
	•	The UI, while sleek, still needs small quality-of-life tweaks

If you're looking for a full entertainment setup that handles both cinematic content and high-performance gaming, the Sony Bravia X90J and PS5 are a killer combo. They weren't perfect at launch, but Sony has been doing the long game right. Between system updates, firmware improvements, and expanded game libraries, the setup has only gotten better with time.

Together, they feel cohesive—like two pieces of a larger vision.

The Verdict: Futureproof, immersive, and finally delivering on the promise of next-gen. If you already have both, you're in the sweet spot. If you're thinking of buying in, you won't regret it.

Real-World Review: Sony Bravia XR X90J

Got this TV, month ago. It is flawless, picture quality is amazing colours and deep blacks are on another scale. Connections is straightforward to use and set up. The walk through to help set up is a piece of genius. Sound quality is fantastic. I can't think of a better TV on the market for this size and level of quality.

X90j bravia XR

I bought this excellent HD smart TV about 3 years ago & have never had a single problem with it. Excellent colors, clarity, features & built in sound system. System setup & settings are easy to understand & adjust. Wall Mounted it & enjoy it from the living room & when cooking in the kitchen. It's has an easy to use SW interface for internet & works well when using with my HP laptop or my Apple iPhone. I have only had SONY HD TVs for the last 30 years & will continue that loyalty. Thank you !

SONY HD smart TV X90J - LOVE IT !

I bought the 65X90J last month after my previous 65X930C had it's last breadth. The 65X930C was an excellent TV and I was looking for something that could live up to its excellence. Leaving aside the 65inch OLEDs that is overpriced, I was looking for a reasonably priced LED TV that could come close to the previous picture quality. The 65X90J did not disappoint. The picture is extraordinarily sharp and the colour is well balanced. It comes with the full suite of video and audio formats and has Full Array backlight which is excellent for HDR. The only downside are the speakers which seems to be the norm with overly thin flat panel TVs. It certainly needs a good soundbar to get the full effect of the various audio formats. This is an excellent TV for the price.

Excellent TV for a great price

After a series of excellent upper-mid-range LCD TVs over the last few years, I was very excited to see what Sony would deliver in 2021. Last year's XH90 reviewed well but had issues with resolving full resolution at 120hz. Thankfully the X90J fixes that, while providing incremental improvements elsewhere. All this adds up to a superb LCD TV that offers a fantastic suite of features. 

Having tried another popular brand I was disappointed to discover that they sacrifice many picture quality features to preserve low latency in game mode. Since I bought the TV primarily for gaming, this was a deal breaker. Thankfully, Sony understands the importance of PQ in all modes, including game mode, resulting in a picture bursting with colour, contrast and brightness, regardless of input source or content type.

Input lag is kept to a minimum (around 18ms), which is fantastically responsive, which combined with the excellent PQ results in an immensely satisfying gaming experience. 

While gaming is my primary use for the TV, as I mentioned already all types of content look equally stunning on the X90J. Sony's local dimming algorithm has been second to none for years and this TV is no exception, offering truly staggering contrast and black levels for an LCD with almost no perceptible blooming, despite relatively few dimming zones. At times it can almost rival OLED for sheer pop, with none of the drawbacks of potential screen burn. And being an LCD, brightness is fantastic - a step up from the XH90 - especially in HDR, with highlights bursting off the screen in a very convincing manner. 

Motion handling is another huge strength for Sony, with wonderfully clean artefact-free images regardless of content or how warmed-up the TV is. Again, another popular brand disappointed me with very noticeably ghosting, especially when the TV was cold, but not so the Sony. 

The sound quality is also a step-up from previous models, with the addition of 'sound-positioning' tweeters on either side of the TV, in addition to the down-firing drivers at the bottom of the set. These add some additional punch and welcome stereo separation, delivering a surprisingly full sound, albeit lacking in low bass, which is to be expected.

One small criticism is that build quality seems to have taken a slight step back from recent years. Nothing to be concerned about, but not quite as premium as previous models at this price point. 

Overall I am delighted with this TV, which has once again reinforced my faith in Sony to deliver where it matters - picture quality. For anyone in the market for an LCD TV, this has to be on their short list and I struggle to think of another LCD that offers a better mix of PQ and gaming credentials.

Great picture when better signal.  Great sound, super features, like the ability tool hook up with Google Home / Assistant.  I have diabetes and I do not need my glasses to read the closed captioning

First Sony TV

I bought this during a pre Thanksgiving sale. My wife and I did the assembly which just involved cutting the packing straps, lifting box up, and inserting legs. I stream using YouTube TV. I hooked  up directly to my wifi using ethernet. My Internet service is 33 mb down. With that speed I had no problems with buffering or drop outs. I also used the optical  digital audio output to hook up to receiver. Everything works great. I lost have two other TVs that use Google TV with Chromecast dongle. The user interface is basically the same for all. The familiarity was a plus

Have had the TV for just over a week, replacing a previous Sony TV (a KD55A1, three years old).  Really impressed with the progress made from old to new unit. Moving to a Google TV is a definite improvement. The sound, picture (definition and brightness) is a marked improvement.

Everything was fine until I got a bright black screen after 4 years. I still can hear sound but the picture just fade away one day. To bad. I loved the colors on that TV.

Good quality, but stop working after 4 years.
