Works like a charm

When a rental company went out of business, I bought a Bluebird commercial thatcher with flail blades that I thatched with every spring.  This fall I wanted to overseed the lawn with KBG more resistant to dollar spot so I needed to also scarify the lawn.  Purchased the Sun Joe AJ805E 15" with the thatching and scarifying heads.  I already had good 12-gauge extension cords to supply power for the 13-amp motor.  Assembly was easy, but the process makes you aware this is not a commercial grade tool. 

First the positive. I see no need to keep the Bluebird commercial thatcher.  The AJ805E has plenty of power and surprisingly it did a better job dethatching then the Bluebird.  With just two bolts I changed over to the scarifying head and scarified at its maximum depth.  Again, I was very satisfied with the power and results.   While this is not a commercial quality build, the performance is excellent and it should last a homeowner many years----assuming your do not try to scarify a rock pile.

Second the negative.  First, as stated in many reviews, thatcher bags tend to be more trouble than they are worth.  Thatch comes out dry and fluffy and quickly fills any size bag you attach to a thatcher.  The Sun Joe is no different than any of the others. If you try to bag while you dethatch, you are constantly starting and stopping.  The quickest way to finish the job is dethatch without the bag attached and then quickly rake up the light weight thatch.  If you have a lot of thatch, the manufacturer will not approve, but you can prop the back door open and inch or two and this will prevent any clogging yet still prevent any stones from being kicked back at you.  

The only significant issue is the design of the air intake for cooling the electric motor.  There is a plastic grill behind which is a foam filter located low on a front corner of the thatcher.  This location means that if you do not use a bag, thatch laying on the surface can get sucked in and plug up the air intake.  You do need to be careful cleaning the screen because you can dislodge the foam filter and allow the buildup of thatch in the motor compartment.

 Bottom line, for performance this good from a $150 thatcher, it makes little sense for a homeowner to spend $50 or more each trip to a rental center for a few hours use of a commercial grade thatcher.

Sun Joe AJ805E is an Excellent Homeowner Tool

Today I used the SunJoe AJ805E dethatcher to dethatch my front lawn...perhaps 2000+ sq ft. I used the uppermost height setting on a trial strip. That worked OK. I found that as you walked forward with the unit you had to adjust the handle up/down until you felt the unit "pulling" which to me it was actually working. And it did its job. The bag is a bit small so 2 up and down strips filled the bag and it was ready for emptying. The unit did leave some pile of "stuff" along the way. After I finished dethatching I used my lawn mower to suck up & bag some of the "stuff" that was left from the unit.

Does what it says it will do

the pins holding the flap down are cheap plastic. One was broke off before assembling and the other broke off within 15 minutes of use. We had to drill holes and zip tie the flap down. it works great like that but you can't use the bagger.

Works fairly well, but I have waited two years to buy a replacement spring tine replacement cartridge. The tines worse down fairly fast, and this company has no time line as to when it will be available. The only part they now carry is the scarifier replacement, which may be a bit too damaging if you use this to just get dead thatch out a couple of times a year.

BEWARE

This is my second one in 2 weeks after I returned the first one that broke during firts use. I am returning this one because of the plastic hinge for the back cover came broken, very disappointed. last year a snowjoe snow blower handle broke that I returned too.

THE REPLACEMENT TINES HAVE NOT BEEN AVAILABLE FOR OVER A YEAR, SUN JOE  WILL TELL YOU THEY ARE ON BACKORDER, ALL LIES.!!!   I HAVE THIS AJ805E MODEL AND CAN NO LONGER USE IT.

Took it out of the box, went outside to dethatch the grass.  Made it about 80% of the way through the front yard and it broke.  Motor stopped working.  Garbage.
