I come back to buy several of these every couple of years. My dad loves being outside. I repurchase as he needs. He has one for the woods, one for yard work, one in the car, etc. Skin cancer runs in our family and this is a staple hat for us.
Nice ventilation, good sun coverage, nice and cool, and the strap is great for those windy days.

I bought mine in Santa Fe 22 years ago.  Worn it day in and day out all those years of gardening, hiking, rafting and stacking wood.  I've loved my hat -  the shade and the vents really work well in the heat  on both sides of the US.  The only thing  that ever broke was the stampede string and that had to do with a puppy chewing it.

Terrific Life Companion

My third in about thirty years.  Total sun protection -- no nose-tips sticking out, neck covered, everything.  Cooler than any other hat I am aware of.  The brim NEVER loses its shape.  After twenty years of running, backpacking, being outdoors in the sun-blasted west, the sun finally fried the top of my first one.   There's a lifetime guarantee but claiming it for #1 just wouldn't be fair!

Had mine since it was first made

It's big.  It kept the sun off my face and neck. Best hat for backpacking because the the back does not have a brim to hit the pack.  Totally works and no need for sunblock for bears to smell!  I tried the Ultra Adventure hat and would likely get one to go backpacking in hot weather but not as much coverage as the original.  The Ultra is better ventilated.  I wore the Adventure in 75+ degree days for six days with no over heating.  If you want functional get the Adventure hat.

My dermatologist recommended Sunday Afternoons and I'm really glad she did. For health reasons, more than ever, I need to really hide from sun exposure but I am not one to just stay inside.

 I'm usually an Akubra girl, but the Adventure Hat has better coverage and the ventilation makes it so much more comfortable in these increasingly hot summer days. It's sturdy, comfortable and adjustable. The chin strap is effective and keeps the hat on even in a strong gust. It's attractive too; I've had many compliments on it and it even inspired my cousin to buy a couple Sunday Afternoon hats for herself. It is unquestionably an all-around great hat.

All around great hat

After wearing this for 8 days hiking in desert southern Utah at Zion and Bryce Canyon national parks, plus a few other days of testing in NC, these are my impressions:  This is one of the most protective hat brims on the market, being about 4 inches, down-sloping and UPF rated.  When first trying it on, it may feel a bit large and "overkill" in the store, but when you are outside under the blazing sun, it doesn't feel overkill any more. The effective shelter is appreciated.  The fact that the rear is a cape does not just provide more neck protection, but is practical in other ways including that you can look up at the sky without the rear of a rigid brim hitting your shoulder or day pack, etc.  It is possible to wear in a car without interfering with the head restraint behind you (also helpful in other seating situations like a rocking chair, bus, etc.  And when the wind blows into your face, there is less lift generated by the brim, so the hat is less likely to lift off your head and blow away or tug against the wind cord under your chin. The cape especially provides more neck protection when looking down, as you might do a lot while gardening, digging, etc.  The fact that half the brim is soft also means that the stiff half of the brim, which is conical when worn, can lay flat when packed in a suitcase, which makes transporting to vacation destinations easy, and it comes out like new rather than creased and deformed.  This ease of travel is one of the best benefits of the hat.  I also found it to be nicely breathable, due to the vents, the fabric that is somewhat breathable, and the way the crown and hat band are configured seems to allow space for some circulation inside.  The cape does not seem to make it hotter on the neck so far in my experience.
Drawbacks:
1) Style.  Probably not the most fashionable choice, so wear it when protection is more important than image.  Wear one of your other hats instead if a garden party is today's event.  This one is perfect for hiking, gardening, desert or mountain environments. and any extreme sun exposure.
2) Wind.  This does generally well in the wind except when the wind is blowing hard against your back (like 10-15 mph+).  Then the cape will typically flip up onto the top of the hat and stick there, being held by the wind even if you have the velcro patch covered.  This exposes your neck to the sun.  Other reviewers have suggested attaching a weight to the cape.  I tried that by clipping a tiny carabiner, but was not happy with it snagging on my day pack and hitting me on the head during severe wind gusts.  The fix I arrived at is to attach a safety pin in the middle of the cape (on the inside surface) and then tie a string around my neck that passes through the open center of the safety pin, leaving a little slack for comfort, but not much.  This holds the cape down, is not uncomfortable, and adds almost no weight.  A little fussy to set up but only needed in high wind like on clifftop hiking trails on windy days, or probably for sailing.  SA could sew a little loop there for that purpose, making the hat more versatile without modification by the user.

    I found this hat to run large.  I normally wear a large, and the S/M size fit me perfectly.  The L/XL could be adjusted to fit, but I was kind of swimming in it and it didn't look as good or wear as comfortably.
    I have 3 different SA hat models that I regularly use, and my wife also has one, and they are high quality, great hats, and worth the price.  I burn easily and have skin cancer in my family, so sun protection is essential to me.  I have owned or tried just about every possible hat available on the market, and these just work, and they last.  Remember to wear sun screen on your face because no hat provides complete protection unless your face is fully masked, which makes it hard to breathe and eat/drink, and is hot.  I did not need sun screen on my neck or ears while wearing this hat.

Protective, light, comfortable; note on wind

This is my second hat.  I LOVE it wear it all the time throughout the spring, summer, and fall.  I wear it boating, my sons baseball games, and any other time I'm in the sun. It's light, airy, keeps the sun off my face and neck and does not make me hot.  It actually makes me feel like I'm in the shade (I have black hair so it keeps me cool!)   My original order for this second hat (which lasted over 5 years) was lost in the delivery and they quickly got me another hat sent out right away and took care of it immediately.   Love this company!

Great hat…..great company

This is the perfect hat for backpacking. While having a nice wide brim in the front, the “cape” in the back does not interfere with  the pack! Very well made and great customer service. Highly recommend.

Love this hat for backpacking!

The hats are great. But, I'm irritated with the service. I bought 2 hats and one was too big. The receipt and policy state they will replace for no charge. I mailed one back with specific instructions and they did not honor the policy. They credited my account less an amount for shipping or something. Not fair. I then had to reorder the hat at full price. You need to fix this situation.

Exchange policy - that don't follow it!

The Derma Safe Hat appears to be discontinued, what a shame.  That hat had side ventilation panels that could be covered up (for full UPF 50 protection) or revealed.  This new hat does NOT allow one to cover the side ventilation panels and hence allows sunlight to come in through the vents.  Am surprised they could claim UPF 50 with this design.

Good Hat But the Derma Safe Hat Was Better
