despite the game lagging and my ps5 crashing because of it– it's an amazing game. i still prefer the first one tho!

The story could of been better

***NO SPOILERS***
I've been playing my review copy and just finished it last night. I debated giving this 2 stars but the production quality of the visuals, sound, animations, and voice work are all exceptional as you'd expect with Naughty Dog. If I'm being honest with myself and anyone reading this though, it was the story that elevated the first game to it's status and the relationship between its lead characters. Taking in the story of this game feels as though the writer either doesn't understand what made people love the first game, or purposely set out to tear that down for edgy shock value or a result of a poor understanding of what "subverting expectations" actually means. 

The writing is so heavy handed, (think basic revenge plot, with a homophobic cult as antagonists while the lead character is gay), and trying so hard to be overly grim and brutal that it feels almost arrogant ; like they fancy themselves a master of the craft purely based on the accolades the first game received in relation to other game writing, and have developed an ego. Like an "artiste" with a hemp bag and manbun that fully believes anything they do is art and that it's far deeper than it actually is.

The trailers and gameplay they've shown to the public paint a very different picture of continuing the story of Joel and Ellie, and completely hide what is arguably more of a main character than Ellie is. They do such a disservice to the original story and characters, and it almost feels like they are advertising a very different story than what is actually the case. There's also a lot of political opinions injected into the game's narrative, and while that doesn't single handedly ruin a game for me, it might for a lot of people who want escapism and to play games to get away from that sort of thing. Whether you personally feel there's some kind of LGBT and diversity pandering political agenda at play here will vary depending on the person playing. 

But overall, I think Neil Druckmann may have been right in saying they don't use the word fun to describe their game. Would I recommend this game ? Maybe. Would I recommend this game if you really liked the story in the first game ? Most likely no, you'd feel better having not played this. And the story just makes me want to echo the sentiment many had when this was announced : that we'd have been better off without a sequel.

The story brings down an otherwise quality title.

Interesting sequel

As I big fan of the first game I was hyped to see the trailer for the sequel. On launch day the game sold out so I didn't get to play it until later that week. Within a few days the game received criticism for the plot being extremely visceral and full of divisive politics.  Naturally I took the criticism with a grain of salt since the top critics including IGN & Metacritic gave TLOU2 a perfect score of 10/10.  Professional game critics can't be wrong?  Well buy me a Crappacino.  The Last of Us 2 begins with beautiful cutscene of Joel and his brother riding horseback into the wilderness. Ellie is living with Dina in the town of Jackson. Ellie is gay which is no surprise since her character is total rip-off of Ellen Page. The first 15 minutes everything is great but the bar scene is where the story takes a dive into a pool of gender-fluids. In the next cutscene we are introduced to Abby who is an overly masculine intersexed women with a vicious meanstreak that builds up to the murder of Joel. The departure of Joel was unsettling and as the game progresses the plot holes keep getting worse. For over half the game you play as Abby, a ruthless psychopath who eventually kills all the male protagonist. Yet we are lead to believe that Abby is a kindered spirit with love in her heart. Do they expect us to feel sympathy for a predator? After Tommy and Jess were killed I had enough. This game is pushing a matriarchal agenda where male characters and heterosexuals in general are demonized and shunned.  What a terrible way to end a series.  Naughty Dog should fire Neal Druckmann and bring back Amy Hennig who wrote a wonderful storyline for the Uncharted series.  FINAL VERDICT:  The jaw-dropping environments is the only aspect of this game that is worth mentioning but the motive behind TLOU2 is to generate HATE which at times can be nauseating. Overall this game is horendous.  SCORE : 1/10
