[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Beautiful, but expensive. The book comes with great bonus items, like a large map of Middle Earth, and arrived in a sturdy slipcase and box. The paper quality is good, but it isn't too thick. It is expensive, but if you want a deluxe edition of the Lord of the rings, this is a solid pick.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is a fantastic edition of this book.  Hardbound in a slipcase.  Includes illustrations and maps.  It is packaged in a special graphic protective box that shows a map of middle earth.  It's pricey and I normally would not pay that much for a book, but I waited until I caught it on sale at a price I was willing to pay.  Along with the Deluxe Illustrated editions of The Simarillion and The Hobbit, they mayke a great looking set for any book lover.

Great gift

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This book comes in a lovely slipcover with some dandy extras. I paid black friday pricing and suggest if you really really want it don't pay retail. 

I also purchased the matching Silmarillion.

The book is bound well and will provide years of serviceable rereads.  The maps and extras are nice but wholly ancillary.

Even at the super discount pricing Wal-mart offered I returned both books. And the reason was I already owned them.

Both books had the same exact paper and ink. The versions I have are the HMH published editions. No slipcovers and the plates are not quite as nice. The problem, friends, is the paper. 

The paper is some sort of supposedly eco-friendly paper that is simply not very bright; and the ink is not actually that dark.  While the paper is sturdy (sturdier in the Silmarillion naturally since it has fewer pages) it is not eye friendly. 

If the slip case editions had superior paper and ink to the editions I already owned I would have kept them. 

Buy them and they will look magnificent on the shelf but not the best for reading. The pages feel a little cramped.

If you want a nice set to read buy that three volume boxed set that Walmart also sells with the cream coloured dust jackets priced anywhere from $39-69 depending on the source.

I returned both books hassle-free to Wal-mart and kept the nearly identical versions that also look great on the shelf.
