I am a huge fan of Rachel Hauck's stories. I really enjoyed The Love Letter, and read it in less than two days. I love dual timeline stories, and this one goes back and forth between Revolutionary times and modern day Hollywood. It was so interesting to travel back in time to the Revolutionary times, and it was refreshing to find people of integrity in modern day Hollywood. Rachel Hauck has a way of writing that draws you into the story and makes you feel like you are there. The Love Letter brings up the question of a legacy, and how family history can really be lost after just a few generations. It made me realize how important it is to work at preserving the stories of our ancestors and our families. Fans of historical fiction, dual timelines, romance and redemption will love this story!

Last summer, I read The Writing Desk, and I thought I had settled on my all-time favorite Rachel Hauck book . . . but at the risk of sounding like a “love the book you're with” kind of girl, I just finished reading an advanced copy of The Love Letter, and now it's my new favorite! Man oh man, that girl can write; even the minor characters of this book (a young African-American South Carolina girl in the late 1700s who basically has the medical skills of a surgeon and an Italian Jew from the Bronx who turns out to be an angel) will entertain and inspire you. The two female characters—historical Esther and modern (and so relatable—with her insecurities and her Diet Coke habit) Chloe—are strong women from the start, but as the novel goes on, it's fun to watch them grow into even more likeable, courageous characters. The same goes for the men that they love; you will root for these guys and enjoy watching them mature and heal. The setting is dear to my heart because I live in South Carolina, where most of the novel takes place. What I enjoyed most about this book is that there are a few little nuggets left to the reader's imagination; you'll still feel satisfied with the ending, but you'll be able to fill in a couple of details on your own. I also want to add that the cover is beautiful; when did book covers start becoming such works of art? The cover isn't a deal-breaker when I love an author, but it's a nice bonus to have a pretty book to carry around!

I don't agree with the reviewers who have called this one a “light” read. There are war scenes (which can't be easy to write), relationship conflicts, and tragedies, but thankfully, she's an author who will never leave you in heartbreak. Also, if you're a person of faith, then you'll appreciate the spiritual depth of this story—and if you're not, I highly doubt you'll be offended and will probably agree that the references add to the complexity of the plot.

Rachel Hauck's recent trend of dual-time novels can be summed up nicely with this quote from this book: “Frightening, isn't it? That something I decide today impacts future generations. Beyond my own flesh and blood.” But don't let the word “frightening” dissuade you from reading these novels, because I guarantee that you'll close the last page feeling uplifted, challenged, and content. If you've enjoyed her other dual-time books, then move this one to the top of your to-read list.

Beautiful Dual-Time Story!

Author Rachel Hauck has penned a beautiful novel that brings together two couples separated by 250 years.  This book is filled with heartbreak and joy as both couples must navigate past or present obstacles to love.  The transformation of each character was amazing to witness.  I especially loved Chloe for her courage, perseverance, and faith.  It was so neat to see how her life positively affected those around her.

I loved this book, and hope to re-read it soon.  Again, Chloe just got to me on so many levels.  I also adore the heavenly touches that Hauck adds to her novels.

Fans of historical and contemporary romance will enjoy this story.  Those who want a Hollywood insider's perspective of that life will be thrilled.

Loved this book!

The Love Letter by Rachel Hauck is a wonderful dual time story--a tale of two couples in love, generations apart. The author has expertly woven their stories together and had this reader enchanted by both. From present time to the Revolutionary War and from Hollywood to South Carolina, readers are taken on two journeys of faith and love that are each stymied by a number of circumstances, war, family, guilt, the past. The author has realistically brought growth and maturity to the characters and enabled them to go forward with their lives despite the difficulties. The characters are strong and vibrant, arousing a variety of emotions as the story unfolds. The scenes capture the imagination and the author has done a fantastic job of portraying the historical aspect of the book. There are a few twists and turns to the story and a couple 'wow, I didn't see that coming' moments that keep interest high. The Love Letter is a poignant story of faith and forgiveness and the legacy of love throughout the ages. "Truth is, we never know the how or why of our ancestors' decisions. We only know our present reality."Another excellent historical romance from a talented author.

Wonderful dual time romance

Rachel Hauck is an outstanding author and this book is evidence of that.  It takes amazing talent to write a “split time” romance that's told from the viewpoint of four characters—two in the past and two in the present day —and allow the reader to easily keep track and engaged in the story.

I thought the story flowed very smoothly between the two time periods.  I loved both storylines, but the present day story was my favorite.  Each of the four main characters were interesting.  The guys were ok.  I honestly didn't have much sympathy for Hamilton, and I wanted Jesse to just move on with his life.  The most interesting guy in this story was Smitty.  There's a mystery about him.

The “strength of character” award in this book goes to both the main leading ladies.  The character that appealed to me most was Chloe.  Her vulnerability about the mistakes of her past and her unwavering trust in God sets the stage for tying both storylines together. I'd love it if this book turned into a series. (A note to the author here: I think there needs to be a book about Chloe's parents. I kind of felt that their story was unfinished, and that it could be a quite interesting one.). There's a surprise twist at the end that adds a perfect touch to Jesse and Chloe's story. 

It's a pleasure to read such a touching love story that has no bad language or embarrassing scenes.  Don't miss this one. I've enjoyed many of Rachel Hauck's books, and this one has its place as one of my favorites.

An inspiring, intriguing story

What an engaging book! I read some of Rachel's earlier works and was excited to see this was a time-slip novel with two storylines happening in one book, which I love. This story is lightning in a 352 page book--you will not regret reading it! 

The contemporary story is set amidst the glitz and glamour of Tinseltown. Rachel gives the reader a strong, complicated female protagonist from the first page in Chloe Daschle, an actress best known for her onscreen deaths. The ins and outs of Hollywood life, along with her developing faith in God (after a particularly bad breakup) set the scene for what is to come later. The male protagonist, Jesse Gates, is a struggling screenwriter, whose first script is based on his ancestor's love letter. Jesse crosses paths with Chloe at a wedding. Each has their own share of struggles with love and what it means to be in a faithful relationship. Can they make things work with one another? Is there even a relationship between them?

In the past, there is also a relationship blossoming. Esther Longfellow and Hamilton Lightfoot are attempting to see if their childhood crush for one another could become more, amidst the shadows of the Revolutionary War spilling into the upcountry of South Carolina. Families split by loyalties to either the Patriots or the King, land disputes that get out of control and dwindling resources put great strain on two young lovers who must grow up quickly in an uncertain time. 

Love, loss and dreams that may never materialize make up the crux of this engrossing story. Is true love a real thing? Can a relationship really be that perfect? How do we know if they are THE ONE? Does Jesus offer us true love?

I did take longer than usual to read it because I didn't want to let go of the characters. Interwoven in these two stories in different eras lies a great thread of hope and forgiveness, along with questions about salvation. I appreciated how the Christian faith was not just "included" into each character's story--their journey was a part of the heart and soul of the characters themselves. There was also great attention to historical details, which I appreciate.

I felt like the ending was wonderfully tied in to both stories and feel blessed to have had a chance to be an advanced reader. I will be gifting this book to several friends I already have in mind who would love a story like this!

Engaging Read!

I didn't like the story. But I rated it as I did because a younger audience would appreciate it more.

Just finished this and was impressed as always with how Ms. Hauck weaves two time periods together and ties them up with a red bow to present them to you as a gift. My favorite character is Hamilton and the sacrifices he makes for love of country and the woman he loves. His greatest strength is when he learns to follow......I love that the love letter is preserved through the ages and is woven into both plots to make for an interesting read. I was more invested in the historical side, as I'm not a fan of Hollywood, but it worked. These characters all faced real struggles with feelings of inadequacy and learning to move on to the path God has planned. I needed tissues a few times over Hamilton and Esther's story. Another home run for this author. 
I won a copy of this book and was blessed. The honest review and opinions are my own and were not required.
