The Master Craftsman by Kelli Stuart is an excellent dual timeline historical fiction story. Join Alma Pihl, Karl Faberge and many others in the early 1900s at the House of Faberge as they create exquisite Russian eggs. The artwork is delicate and amzing.

However three generations later Nick Laine, a an accomplished treasure hunter is on his deathbed. His estranged daughter, Ava, and wife, Carol, have come to his bedside to say their final goodbyes. Nick desires to redeem his lost time with Ava and train her to be a treasure hunter. All is going well until….

This delightful dual timeline modern day and historical fiction is an amazing tale that will take you back and forth in historic Russia. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and highly recommend. I was given a free copy for my honest review which I was happy to do.

Enthralling Dual Timeline

This was a fascinating book with lots of history, intrigue and takes place in a dual-time style book.  It is modern time and as well as the time of the Bolshevik Revolution.    Ava travels to Russia for a treasure hunt masterminded by her estranged father, a man who is in quickly declining health.  We learn of the Faberge eggs and the mystery that surrounds them and the Faberge goldsmithing family.  
Ava travels with her mother and others that add to the interest that this story brings out.  The historical writings in this book appear so well researched and the author's knowledge of the culture and people are clearly portrayed here.  I loved the search for the missing Faberge egg and the adventure that they experience.  The Dual time was well done.  All in all, a very well written historical!

Excellent historical

This is my first book by Kelli Stuart and I am totally blown away. The author's skill in melding history, fiction, and suspense to create a spell-binding dual timeline novel is truly masterful. I felt like I was living with the Faberges in Russia during the early 1900s and equally felt like I was on an exhilarating treasure hunt with Ava and Nick during the present time. I learned quite a bit about Russian history through the eyes of Karl Faberge and loved learning about the man behind the exquisite creations.

The story is plot-driven and moves at a fast clip with plenty of gasp-worthy twists and turns. Karl Faberge and his wife Augusta along with his employee Albert make up the characters in the past. The present time's cast of characters is large; it includes Ava and her mother, Ava's estranged treasure hunter father Nick, and Ava's neighbor Zak along with several other minor characters. I felt the greatest affinity for Karl, who had the most prominent and introspective voice. Anyone who enjoys historical fiction and dual timeline fiction would absolutely love this incredible journey. This is definitely on my top reads of 2022 list!

masterful storytelling

I liked everything about this book, especially the historical details that educated me about the making of the fabulous Faberge eggs. The story of Ava Laine traveling to Russia to find this missing treasure captured my attention from beginning to end. I enjoyed the details about how the House of Faberge created their masterpieces as well as the contemporary story of Ava's quest for the egg and all of the effort that entailed. The story is one of family devotion, love, hardship and overcoming as well as forgiveness. I loved it!

Brilliantly Written and Captivating Characters

I was chosen to read and review this book through Revell Reads. This review is my own opinion, freely given. I asked to read this because I really like historical fiction and was intrigued by learning more about the Romanov dynasty and the history surrounding them.

I enjoyed this book. It was a bit different in that it jumped in time between now and the early 1900s. That did not detract from the book at all, in fact, it helped keep the focus. This is a historical fiction book and it puts a spin on the Faberge eggs and the what-if of an extra, unknown egg.

The book is very well written and it flows very well. The characters are quite believable and "real". It is part mystery and part family drama combined in a good mix.

This is published by Revell Publishing, a Christian book publisher, so I expected there to be some reference to God/Christianity in some form. That is not the case at all. There is no reference at all to anything Christian. No one prays or goes to church. No one mentions God at all. This is a big disappointment and a big loss of witnessing opportunity. But, on the upside, it is a clean book, the closest it comes to not being clean is the near swearing by Ava and the mention of Faberge's affair.

Overall, I give this a 4 out of a 5-star review. I do think you will enjoy this book as long as you are not expecting a Christian book.

Historical fiction

This book is set in present day Florida and 1917 Russia.

Nick Laine is on his death bed and is needing his estranged daughter Ava to try to find and retrieve a lost decorative Russian egg. He sends Ava on a trip of a lifetime that is full of danger to find this special egg. What will Ava discover as her adventure unfolds?

Alma Pihl is a Russian egg artist in 1917 Russia and is needing to flee to Finland and she takes her secrets with her to hide. Will Ava be able to discover where the missing treasure is located? You will have to find out for yourself.

I really liked this book and it was a good read, however, there are not definitive chapters and some sections are longer than others. The jumping from present day to 1913 isn't always a smooth transition, therefore making the book sometimes are to follow. Lastly, I need to mention that I was given this book complimentary from the publisher (Revell), and was not compensated for this book and was not required to post a positive or negative review.

An exciting fictional history novel

This is a time split novel, and a treasure hunt. What do we end up looking for, a priceless egg, more precisely a Fabrege' egg!

This is a story of family relationships, and the losses that sometimes happen in family dynamics, we we see it play out here in our search.

The time split puts us back at the time of the Russian Revolution, and then back to the present time. We end up in Russia, where I really wouldn't want to be right now, but then back in the to Florida.

Parental relationships play a big part in this story, in both the past and present, and we see how this really shapes their children's lives.

The author did a great job of making me feel I was there while these talented artists created treasures. We also see what happens when people have to flee for their lives, and the ramifications.

My main criticism of this story is it is not a Christian read, no it is a clean read, but their is no faith displayed here, which I come to expect from the books I read from a Christian publisher.

Treasure Hunt

This dual-time novel showcases the artists who crafted the fabulous Fabergé eggs and a treasure hunt in modern day. What if there was a secret egg that was taken out of Russia just after the Revolution? 
Ava is summoned to her estranged father's death bed. He wants her to find an object steeped in the elegance of 1900s Russia and The House Of Fabergé. 
With extensive research, the author takes us to St Petersburg in the early 1900s and the almost fairytale setting amidst political turmoil. Ms. Stuart brings us to the present with a cast of characters that can be surprising. I was disappointed that in the past, Nick chose treasure hunting over his daughter, Ava and wife, Carol. Things change when his health deteriorates. Ava is adrift in her go-nowhere job when Nick gives her the task that has her creative dreams yearning to follow. She is to hunt for a Fabergé egg that might not exist. 
This is a very interesting story that smudges the lines between good and evil and keeps you on your toes. I kept looking for a spiritual thread. Since Revell is the publisher, I expected this to be a Christian novel. It is not, but it is a clean-read and very enjoyable to see the progression of the characters.

I have been fascinated by the Faberge Imperial Eggs for years. Probably as long as I've been equally as fascinated by the story of the ill-fated royal family of Russia. That was the reason I picked up The Master Craftsman as soon as I read the back cover blurb. Kelli Stuart is a new-to-me author and I find it fun to discover authors that I've never read before – it was also a real bonus that this is a dual timeline story!

Dual timeline stories have become a real favorite of mine. The blending of my two preferred genres, suspense and historical, in carefully crafted layers that allow the overarching mystery to play out over the course of decades – or even centuries – is the cat's meow for me.

As anticipated, The Master Craftsman was quite an interesting story. The international treasure hunting adventure was probably my favorite part of the story. Though, the poignant moments of loss, regret, betrayal, the revelation of human frailty, and the hope of second chances were as moving as the adventure was exciting.

I will confess that there were a few minor things that annoyed me a little bit, however, I really did enjoy the story overall. Kelli Stuart more than kept me intrigued by the story of the Faberge family, a story that I didn't really know much about and has now sparked more than one Google search. For one thing, did you know that women were a part of the House of Faberge's design as well as their success?

If you enjoy dual timeline stories or a good treasure hunting adventure tale, Kelli Stuart's The Master Craftsman might just be right up your alley. I know I found it to be quite interesting....

~ What ~
This four-hundred-page paperback targets those who like a treasure hunt told between three generations. With the use of slang words, topics of abandonment, physical abuse, and death may not be appropriate for immature readers. The ending includes the author's notes, acknowledgments, her biography, and advertisements.

In this story told in two different eras during the Russian revolution and current day, the famous Karl Faberge confides in one of his master craftsmen about a secret egg he has created. Alma escapes to Finland, keeping their secret hidden, even from her husband.

Decades later, a young woman named Ava who has not found her footing in life yet, reconnects with her ill treasure-hunter father who is determined to make one last mission: finding the missing egg. As they uncover the past involving the Romanov family and the exquisitely carved art, all must find the treasures that are buried within them.

~ Why ~
This fictional hunt includes the history of Russia's troubles, St. Petersburg's glory, and Faberge's dedication to his beautiful craft. I enjoyed reading the background of the eggs and how they were designed and created.

~ Why Not ~
Those who prefer not to read books about Russia's tumultuous history during the early 1900s may have no interest in this book. Others may not care for the jumping back and forth in time, focusing more often on the current day tale. The story builds slowly and is sometimes repetitive until the last thirty pages.

~ Wish
Having read and enjoyed one of Stuart's prior novels, I was looking forward to this one, but I often struggled with its stifled conversations, repetition of history, and lack of action. Having several characters whose names started with A made the read complicated.

~ Want ~
If you like reading about Russia and Faberge's artwork, this novel may be engaging for you but I found it a tad dull and predictable.
