Lauren has an unusual profession for a woman in the 1920's because she works as an assistant curator at a famous museum. All her life, her father used his work on Egyptian archeological digs as an excuse to keep away from her mother and herself. Christmas and birthdays were ignored by him. Even when her mother was dying, he didn't make time for them.
Suddenly, her past pops up in her life, first in the form of Joe. Although he had been her constant companion when they were children, they have not seen each other for years. Now he is a busy police detective trying to find out why his best friend and work partner went bad. He also needs to identify Egyptian forgeries, and asks Lauren for help.
The second part of her past to resurface is her father. He wants to have a relationship with her, and invites her to go on an Egyptian dig. As Lauren slowly allows her dad back in her life, red flags start appearing about him. When Lauren confronts her dad, he always has a good excuse.
In the meantime, things have started heating up in the forgery search, and with her relationship with Joe. Just as they are closing in on the ones involved, her dad's name starts coming up. He can't be involved, can he? That would mean he had used Lauren to further himself. Can he be that cold and calculating? Will they find the real person behind it all and clear her dad?
I enjoyed reading about the character's faith. This exciting story has lots of red herrings, and will make you will feel like it is the 1920's, and part of the Egyptian craze sweeping the nation--it was so far reaching that my midwestern mom, a child then, named her dog King Tut!
I recommend this five-star book to those who like mysteries, Egyptian history, or good clean stories.

All That Glitters…..

This book was fantastic. It brought back memories of visiting the Field Museum in Chicago. One of my favorite exhibits was Egyptian artifacts.
The story was informative and spellbinding from the first glimpse of the Metropolitan Museum to the dramatic conclusion.
Ms. Green made me care about Lauren, her grief surrounding her mother and the complicated relationship with her father.
The details of uncovering forgeries were so interesting. “If you become an expert on the real thing, you will know the counterfeit when you see it.” This goes for antiquities and also for reading people and their motives.
When Detective Joe Caravello enlists the help of longtime friend, Lauren, they quickly renew their friendship. It is significant that they met at the Museum as children and many places there hold fond memories.
The story is filled with unique characters, some based on real people. The author has given Joe a warm, loving family that Lauren found missing in her own life. She tried to please her father but was chasing after a false love. Then she realized the true love God had for her.
A riveting book from a remarkable storyteller.

Egyptian artifact mystery

"Sometimes people felt what they feared. And sometimes they saw what they wanted to see."

This may be my favorite Jocelyn Green book to date! I absolutely adored being in 1925 New York City and seeing the city through the eyes of history. The plot was complex and engaging, with a rousing mystery regarding forgeries and stolen guns, corruption, and bribery during the era of Prohibition. There was a sweet, slow-burn romance between Joe and Lauren who shared a history, a thirst for justice, and love for art. A strong faith thread highlighting the all-encompassing love of our Heavenly Father surrounded the characters as themes of acceptance and finding home were explored. Historical details like the emergence of Egyptology as science and art as well as the structuring of the Egyptian artifacts at the Metropolitan Museum of Art were absolutely fascinating. I will have a whole new appreciation and perspective the next time I visit the MET. 

Joe and Lauren, though they seem worlds apart as an NYPD detective and PhD in Egyptology, were truly a perfect couple. Their hearts, purpose, and worlds melded so seamlessly that it was hard to believe they'd been apart for more than a decade and a half. Joe's integrity, love for family, loyalty, and devotion made him a fantastic hero. Lauren's intelligence, bravery, and compassion made her an excellent counterpart to Joe. There are some surprises along the way as Joe and Lauren chase down Egyptian forgeries and you won't be able to put down the book when the intrigue picks up speed.

It's a wonderful combination of history, mystery, suspense, faith, and romance. I received the book from Baker Publishing Group via Interviews and Reviews and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are my own.

wonderful historical fiction

Set in New York City in the mid-1920s, The Metropolitan Affair is a wonderful Gilded Age mystery complete with the rich and famous, lavish parties, forgers of antiquities, a beautiful Egyptologist, and a German-Italian NYPD detective. The story is original, well-plotted, and contains natural sounding dialogue. The author paints vivid mental images including those that impact the olfactory and taste senses, leaving the reader's mouth watering for pastrami on rye or the best cup of coffee with a cannoli on the side. The theme is about discovering the One that, unlike friends and family may do, will never leave nor forsake you, and whose love is never conditional. 

I most highly recommend The Metropolitan Affair, the first book in Green's On Central Park series, and her previous series, The Windy City Saga.
