The Newcomer is book two in The Amish Beginnings series. It is nice to see what happens to these characters after arriving in the New World. They face a language barrier as well as being different in their Amish beliefs, and also are naive to the ways of this New World. The historical quality of this book is superb and I loved learning about The Ephrata Cloister a commune in 1720. The character development of Anna and Bairn is a slow and painful process and the antics of Felix continue to make you chuckle. The Newcomer in this book is almost to good to be true and as the plot thickens you discover secrets, lies, and cover ups that make you wonder what is going to happen next. Suzanne writes Amish fiction on another level and you won't be disappointed with this book. I recommend reading Anna's Crossing first so you know the background of the characters you will fall in love with.

Superb Historical

This is the second book in the Amish Beginnings Series.  I have not read the first book, but don't feel it is necessary in order to enjoy this one.  That being said, I wouldn't mind reading it and know I would enjoy seeing Anna and Bairn earlier in their relationship.  The Newcomer follows Anna and her people as they try to start a life in the New World.  Getting to Pennsylvania wasn't easy, and they can only hope that starting over will be less difficult.  Little do they know their troubles are far from over.  

Anna was finally becoming excited about starting her life in the new world.  She can't wait to get to their future home and get started before it gets cold.  Going to a new place brings all sorts of new fears and many of the people are letting their imagination get the best of them.  When Bairn  doesn't accompany them, Anna is left feeling abandoned.  But their group is joined my a newcomer they all can't help but be drawn to him.  He is an optimist, and is so excited about their journey and their new land.  Anna misses Bairn, and can't help but wonder if he will ever return to her.  The newcomer isn't shy about his interest in Anna, and she begins to wonder just what the rest of her life is going to look like.  Will her first love return, or will their adventure bring other new things with it?

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Historical Fiction.  My attention was kept the entire time, and I had no way of guessing what was going to happen next.  I found it interesting learning about some of the things people had to go through when coming to a new country.  I liked that it showed a glimpse of some of the first Amish settlers, and where they started when building a new life.  I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.  All opinions expressed are my own.
