An ode to the sweet romantic writing of Jane Austen, The Sisters of Sea View by Julie Klassen is a delightful tale of family and love that sweeps you away to an English seaside resort in the Regency era. If you love Little Women and Jane Austen, I truly believe you will adore this novel. Julie Klassen writes tales of sweet romance in Regency England with an artistic style similar to Jane Austen, but with pacing and vernacular for a modern reader. She does deliver some moments of swoon-worthy kisses and suspenseful rescues, but the strength of this story are the characters, which are written with depth and feeling. I love seeing characters grow spiritually and emotionally in all of Julie Klassen's stories, but especially in this book. With a cast of interesting characters at a seaside resort in Regency England, the interactions amongst the community, the family of sisters, and romantic couples are entertaining, heartwarming, and enlightening.  There are so many important lessons about faith in these pages, but the best wisdom I gleaned from this tale was to have courage and always believe in the Lord's provision. I cannot wait to read the next installment of the series, and see what happens next for these sisters on Devonshire shores!

An ode to the sweet romance of Jane Austen!

I have been a fan of Julie Klassen since I read her very first book, which remains on my shelves to this day, having been read twice. I love a good Regency, and Klassen does this genre incredibly well. She is so adept at forming bonds between her characters and digging deep into their lives and relationships. 

This series started well and promises to be so very good. I really enjoyed spending time with this family and their lodgers. I can't wait to see what happens with each sister. Well done!

Wonderful start to new series

In the first book of Klassen's On Devonshire Shores series we meet the Summers sisters and their mother along with the current visitors of their guest house, neighbors, and villagers of Sidmouth. The 1819 setting made for interesting reading regarding medical practices of the times as well as sea bathing customs and etiquette. The theme of the story is one I have not often encountered in my reading, but one of great importance. As we meet a variety of people who have been impacted by life's hardships, be they physical or financial, we come to realize that it is the allowing the crippling of one's spirit that is truly the most devastating to one's quality of life. 

I highly recommend The Sisters of Sea View. As usual Klassen fills hours of reading pleasure with a host of well-developed characters, a quaint setting, and a well-penned story. I am grateful to have received a complimentary copy from Bethany House via NetGalley without obligation. All opinions expressed here are my own.

Important Theme

It's been a while since I've indulged in a Julie Klassen book and I'm so happy that I did. This book starts a new series on the Devonshire Shores and I thoroughly enjoyed being transported to this 1819 coastal town of Sidmouth. I learned a good deal about the trending medical theories on benefits of sea-bathing and how it was actually done. There are many characters to sort through since it is the first book of the series but the characters were all unique and felt like long-time friends by the end of the book. The four Summers sisters are truly delightful. Sarah, Emily, Viola, and Georgiana are very different yet connected by sisterly love and loyalty. Sarah's commitment to family and Georgiana's tender sweetness were heart-warming. Emily's disappointments and Viola's bitterness and angst were heart-breaking but their triumph over these obstacles was gratifying. I loved getting to know the Henshall family and the Hutton family and hope to see more of them in future books of the series. Of course, as in most Regency novels, there is a swirl of secrets and a natural disaster of sorts; these plot twists work to bring the sisters, guests, and townspeople closer together. The guests at Sea View are quite entertaining and you'll feel like you've gone on a holiday by the sea as you mingle with this eclectic group.
