Westmont Prep High School - an elite boarding school in Indiana harboring some big secrets. When a group of selected students join the initiation for a top-secret cult led by upperclassmen, those secrets unleash horrifying murders and suicides. The murderer was caught, supposedly. But why the suicides? 

Popular podcasts have kept the murders in the news, especially since the spate of suicides involving students have occurred. Rory Moore, forensic re-constructionist along with her work colleague and life partner, serial profiler Lane Phillips, are called to assist with research on the podcast. And the fun begins. 

The Suicide House is a wonderful, suspenseful whodunit which kept me wondering throughout. There were so many possibilities and red herrings tossed out by the author, Charlie Donlea. To be fair, the red herrings all contributed to the conclusion, but never in the way I thought they would. There's nothing better than a book that surprises you throughout, all the way to the end. This one definitely did that!

I received an awesome prize pack from the publisher that accompanied the ARC of the book.  It had:  3 pencils from Westmont Preparatory High School (the fictional school in the book), a flattened, stamped Lucky Penny, a small, red candle, a letter from the administrator of the school, a small journal.

This book sounded interesting.  A suicide house, that teens were going to and killing themselves, by stepping in front of trains.  Sounds creepy, too.

There all sorts of law investigators who are directly and indirectly involved in the plot.  There are reporters who are unofficially investigating.  The idea of a private school where there's a secret society that causes kids to kill themselves is a strong draw for the investigators.

Of the investigators, the two main ones are Dr. Lane Phillips who is a forensic psychologist and a criminal profiler with his partner Rory Moore who is a cold case reconstructurist who happens to have an Autism Spectrum Disorder that allows her to focus on cold cases and bring missed clues to light and help solve the cases.  Lane and Rory have joined up before, they provide a unique method for solving crimes.

The case began a year ago, when two male students were found murdered at an abandoned faculty boarding house on the campus of Westmont Preparatory High School.  The two boys who were murdered had been tormenting a chemistry teacher at the school.  Evidence pointed to the teacher's manifesto that was found in his house and the fact that the teacher tried to kill himself by stepping in front of a train locomotive.  The teacher is basically brain dead, so the police declared the case solved.

This year, three different students have killed themselves by stepping into the path of the oncoming train and has stirred up the notion that the case isn't as closed as it appears to be.

One of the investigative reporters, Mack Carter has a podcast that has attracted the attention of the students at the school and others who would like to solve the case once and for all.

When Lane arrives at Mack's house to go over a taped interview with one of the suicide victims, there was an explosion and Mack is killed and Lane is severely injured.  Only with the arrival of Rory on the scene, by following the tracking device on Lane's cell phone, is she able to successfully get Lane out of the burning house.

At the school, all students are encouraged to journal all of their thoughts and feelings.  The thing is, a lot of people have something to hide and their journal in the wrong person's hand spells disaster.

The Seniors at Westmont Prep are hazing selected Juniors with their game of MAN IN THE MIRROR.  The Juniors have a list of quests they must accomplish in order to become members of the secret society.

Im going to start out by saying that this book has all of my favorite things. A true crime podcast? Check. A secret society? Check. Suspicious deaths? Check. Cold case reconstruction? Check. Creepy dolls? Check. I could keep going, believe me. 

Our book starts with a podcast, chronicling the the murders of two prep school students that occurred during a secret society hazing event. All of the evidence points to a scorned teacher, who later attempts suicide, and is left in a vegetative state. Throughout the next year, the students who were involved with the society start committing suicide the same way that their teacher tried to end his life...by jumping in front of a train near campus. 

Rory, a forensic deconstructionist, and Lane, a forensic psychologist, are first called in to work on the podcast, but find themselves working to reopen the case. 

I love Rory. She loves to melt into the background, exclusively wears combat boots, yet refurbishes porcelain dolls in her downtime. And shes insane at her job. The way she thinks about things and the way shes able to put facts together are enviable. 

The story was fast paced, aided by super short chapters. Ill never know why I can read a book more quickly when the chapters are short, but here we are. Id recommend this one to creeps like me, and also anyone who likes a good thriller that keeps you on your toes.

I received an advance reading copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.  This is the fifth book I've read from this author and it might be his best yet.  It's book two in the Rory Moore/Lane Phillips series.  The book focuses around a esteemed prep school.  The prep school is called Westmont.  In the outskirt fields of campus there is an abandoned house where things don't seem right. This is where students get initiated to a secret club that no one really knows, but the rumors run rampant, and you have to be asked to join. There are tales about the Man in the Mirror.

The man in the mirror is believed to be a former teacher.  Many have tried to explore the case and speak with him but he doesn't speak anymore. The students tell the tale of how he slaughtered two students. Its been over a year but students are still going to the man in the mirror house and killing themselves. This is when Rory and Lane take the case. (Rory takes on old cases.) As I read this book, I thought I had it all figured out. But once again I was totally surprised!! Which doesn't happen a lot since I read mysteries a lot.  Even though this book is number two in the series it can also be a standalone which I liked. Sometimes I have a tendency to forgot things in previous books. I will be buying this book to add to my shelf of must own books! Can't wait for the next one. I would recommend this book to friends.
