I became interested in minimizing all my “stuff” this past January.  I never realized how much time I wasted maintaining “stuff”.  I still have a long way to go to keep paring down BUT in the meantime I've used the tips and knowledge to make much better purchases or better yet, I buy far less “stuff”.  Not knowing the economy would take such a turn when I started this process, just changing my perspective on what I really need and not buying things that are  just going to subtract from what's more important, I've used my extra time to learn to garden and pressure can food this summer. I've spent more time with my family and even had more time to start getting some workouts in.  I wish I stumbled on this 20 years ago.  Check out Joshua's you tube channel and his blog as well.  In a world that's fast changing this is much more than “decluttering or reorganizing”, it changes your perspective, it opens your eyes to what you're missing out on and what really matters.

Need some clarity in your life? Things that Matter examines the many distractions with thought provoking questions to help you hone in on what keeps you from living with full purpose.  Known for his books on minimalism, Joshua Becker writes this as a next step in clearing the path to a more focused and meaningful life. Recently retired this will be very helpful for planning what comes next. Included is an exercise to help you discover what matters most by identifying where your abilities and passions align.

Helpful and Motivating

This was my first book by this author. At first glance I thought the ideas weren't anything I hadn't heard and considered before, but then the author added questions for consideration at the end of each chapter and I realized that I while I may have *thought* the idea wasn't new to me, I clearly was not living in alignment with my values in several areas. It definitely provoked a lot of careful re-evaluation.

The book was a light read and set up in a way to make it easy to read a bit, think on it and come back. Although the author and I disagree with some underlying perspectives in certain areas, I still found the book approachable and was able to pick up applicable insights from it.

Thought provoking read

A good overview on things that often distract us from living an intentional life that leads to fewer regrets. I particularly enjoyed the parts about serving others over ourselves - we all know on some level that would lead to more happiness but we need to hear it more often!

Ever since reading Joshua Becker's first book, The More of Less, I've continued to follow his blog and social media posts. His is a voice I've learned to trust. So when I had a chance to read Things That Matter, I jumped on it. The book doesn't disappoint: it's an easy read, yet thought provoking. I chose to take it a chapter every day or two, and examine each of the distractions he outlines to see which ones I need to work on most in order to live a life that truly matters, a life with few regrets. I've got a long way to go, but the examples and encouragement he provides demonstrate it's possible and worth the effort. Do yourself a favor. Read Things That Matter. You won't regret it.

As the world enters a "new normal" post-pandemic, I found myself at loose ends. This book has helped me reevaluate my priorities and refocus my thinking. The chapters on fear, money, and materialism were especially helpful for me.

Inspirational book about minimalism

Things That Matter, rises from minimalism to a discovery in purposeful living.  Becker offers a guide in self-awareness revealing and tying our gifts, values and passions toward an intentional life.  Reducing the distractions, honing in on what matters offer insight and wisdom into unveiling the meaningful.  He continues to guide us into the exploration of ‘what's enough' while posing questions to deepen our connection to ourselves, to others and to the world.
