This sifting litter box works perfectly if you DON'T follow the directions. The directions say to put the sifter on top of the two pans so the sifter will get covered with wet pee and poop making it impossible to keep it from getting clogged and gross. The reviews I read said this was a problem. Why does this happen? Because the directions are wrong. If you ignore the directions and put the sifter in the middle of the two pans then  you will lift up the top full pan and pour it into the sifter sitting in the empty bottom pan. Them you will sift the litter into the empty bottom pan and then empty the sifter pan into the garbage. Then put the sifter in the now empty top pan and the full clean pan then goes on top.  The one thing I don't like about the pan is the door. It is flimsy and doesn't stay on. Other than that it is worth it.

Honestly these litter boxes have been such a game changer for our two cats. I make much less of a mess and I don't have to scoop I just pull up they layer that sifts out the waste from the litter. Then when it's time to dump the litter it's easy. The only thing that's a little difficult is getting the other bottom portion that you switch over to when you scoop sometimes get stuck but it will get unstuck with some wiggling. Other than that they are large and make doing littlerboxes not time consuming. If your cat is stingy you can also remove the front door flap. Recommend this product.

Large easy to use litter box, no more scooping!

First of all it is high quality construction MADE IN THE U.S. of A.!!! I found it fits the bill for me, I will say that the "nesting" pans are too tight and cumbersome to seperate due to the weight of the litter in the top pan, soulition: I do not nest them keeping the empty one seperately, I have pleanty of room so this works best for me. With the pans not "nested" the side clamps for the cover do not "hook on" but this is also an advantage for me being arthritic and gravity keeps the cover in place just fine. It only takes a moment to lift the "strainer" and dump it into a pail with a plastic bag for disposal. Yes the strainer does get a little "build-up" of wet litter so about once a week it gets a hosing out in the yard. All and all it is very easy to use and clean up is quick and easy with a garden hose.

As for the door/flap I opted not to use it as the litter box is kept outside on a screened piazza and being in south Florida I am afraid that the interior would build up too much heat, especially in the summer.

I love it and my cats do also....

"Easy Cleanup: Van Ness Sifting Litter Box"

I bought this pan to keep my pet's mess under control and after a little coaxing she went and used the pan. The clean-up was a breeze and no bags or deodorizers were needed. I wish I would have seen this product sooner. The only set back is that you have to use it with the more expensive clumping litter, but other than that this is a great product. I find my self telling all my family members about it as well. I have to say, money well spent.

Cleaner than gthe real expensive pans

I ordered 2 of these boxes when we moved. I have a smaller version of this and have loved it for my 2 cats. Unwittingly, or ignorantly, I did not fully understand that giant is GIANT. Still, it is perfect, probably better than the old box I have, esp. for 2 cats. It is easy to use and very easy to change. I use XXL trash bags as liners for these boxes and sift out the cat stuff every few days into another trash bag. By doing this, I keep the litter boxes themselves clean and only the sifter is dirty. There is a drawback to this as the thickness of the trash bags does make it a bit difficult to snap the top onto the box but it can be done with a bit of patience. The sifter does need cleaned periodically but not often and odor is negligible. I do add baking soda to the bottom of the pan after I place the sifter in the box. I keep 2 boxes filled but only keep one in the house, trading them back and forth weekly. Right or wrong, it seems to help keep the boxes from holding odors. Probably everyone doesn't have room or space to do this but I find it helpful for me. Also, it allows me to bring the extra box into the house if we are going to be gone for several days.

Biiiigg Box!

I'm still getting used to my new litter boxes yet I already appreciate them.  They're a snap to set up with the easy to understand instructions.  Now I'm not bothered by having to stop down when I'm cleaning litter boxes.  I am no longer bothered by odors.  I especially like the doors but my three cats aren't too sure of them yet.  One box had it's door pop off during set up and I couldn't get it to work correctly and my cats use that litter box more often. I got the door back on but couldn't get it to swing anymore. It's not a problem since it's in the back half of the house.  My sciatica doesn't flare up as often since I don't have to crouch down as much.  Now if only I can get the cats to get used to that swinging door!  I like the color and the lines of these new litter boxes. The tops are easy to snap off and on.

I got this because the clumping litter was too hard to scrape off of the old litter box with the little scoop but it actually clumped up into bricks through the strainer and was even harder to scrape off so we switched to a non clumping type and it works great now.

Works best with non clumping litter.

I am not going to say it is perfect, or could not be improved but sure beats using the old open kind. I find it easy to clean, no odors, and the cats love using it. Even kittens like their privacy. I am glad I bought it, and would buy again if I had to.

Best yet

Not recommended for larger (long) cats . They have a hard time turning around.  They end up doing there business outside the box. Very heavy to lift and messy when you need to clean

Think twice before buying.

i honestly can't recommend this product because in order for the latches to lock you have to put the lid on the wrong direction. and by doing that the door won't open. plus the door keeps falling off anyhow. so its a really flawed design. i would honestly give it 0 stars if i was allowed. so avoid this product at all costs.
