Minwax Product Support

Having used Minwax forever, i bought the "New" water based stain and had it tinted. (staining SW Yellow pine to crimson) This new stain is really thick. A stir stick will stand up in it. I don't like it.
1.  A lot of product is left on the wood and wiping off the excess is a gooey job. Applying Less stain doesn't seem to work.
2. I finished my second coat and still do not have the deep color that i'm used to getting. (Normally a 2 coat application using the "old" thinner stain)
3. Going back for a third coat. At this rate, i'm using more stain and that increases cost.
4. Using a brush wasn't very good. It's thick and a brush leaves narrow rivers of stain that won't lay down.
5. A sponge was better, but  #1 above
6. Cloth didn't work at all. The stain seemed to dry and get tacky while i was applying thin coats. 
OK, so maybe i need to get used to it...i'll finish this project
 (2 drawer chest - new build) and add a review as a follow up.

Right now, court's out and i'd hold off on recommending this

The new water based stain isn't working

I spent the about 10 years of my early life working in a furniture repair and refinishing shop where we exclusively used Minwax products, that experience left me with a long appreciated the high quality products produced by Minwax.  Now several years later, and refinishing a piece of my own furniture, I defaulted to a Minwax product.  I was attracted to this product (Wood Finish / Semi-Transparent Color Stain), in the color of Hickory.  Largely because the  color of Hickory in the oil based stain was not available in my local area, and this product was able to be mixed/made in the store, in the Hickory color.  All good so far, but after applying the 1st coat,  my immediate reaction was "What is the purpose of this product?" (i.e. the confusion), and "Why would anyone call this a stain?"  As in no way does this product behave like a stain, in terms of working with it. It goes on very thick and it is very difficult to produce a even coat.  So soon as it dried, with several inconsistencies, I sanded the piece back down to almost bare wood.  Determine to use the product, I jumped in for round 2, applied a heavy coat (to keep it very wet, dripping wet) and worked as quickly as I could and then wiped off the excess.  When that dried, it came out Fair (hence the Fair rating).   However, I'm still confused as to what this product is intended for?  Is it intended for finishing/staining wood at or near a professional level? or Is this product intended to be the "Chalk Paint" of stains?  Something more for arts and crafts, vs finishing a valued piece of family furniture?   I survived the experience without too much grieve, and I believe once I seal it the piece will look and perform OK.    But I can't recommend the product,  so back to real stains, which are far easier to work with and control, producing a superior finish.

Stained and Confused

I purchased this stain for refinishing a Pottery Barn entry table.  Of course I spent 2 full days stripping, sanding, prepping for stain, and removed all dust.  The first coat was very uneven, if product is left on too long it will remove the color.  I did figure out that I was able to get it ok by filling in areas with the second coat.  But there are spots where the product has piled up and looks terrible.  I am now going to have to go purchase very fine grain sandpaper to assist with this issue.  If that doesn't work I plan to go over this with some oil based stain which is probably what I should have done in the first place.  This table would have been finished already had I not opted to try this product.

Digital Care Team

I hate writing bad reviews because I know many people in a company work hard to produce a great product. However, my review will be very similar to other 1-star reviews. I have been a minwax user for 40 years and have had great success with their oil-based products. This product would probably be fine on a small project without a lot of nooks and crannies. I was doing shaker style cabinet doors and it was difficult wiping stain in the corners. The biggest problem was how fast the paint dried. You could not wipe it fast enough so areas would be thicker than others. Also, why would solid stain need to be wiped. The stain was just like solid house stain I use. Wiping it off has spots that can look good but look like a semitransparent stain. There were many spots on the cabinet that were heavy because it dried before wiping in time creating rough surfaces. It was a nerve-racking process. Very disappointed in product. I did not use the applicator talked about in the instructions because I didn't know what it was, but I tried both a foam brush and quality paint brush. I do not believe the application device was the problem.

A nightmare

I purchased an unfinished desk and planned to finish it with a solid stain thinking that it would soak into the wood and leave fewer streaks than paint.  Boy was I wrong.  I followed the directions exactly and it is so streaky, and uneven in color.  It is very hard to work with.  I hope the desk is not ruined as it is supposed to be a christmas gift for my grandson.  I plan to give it a sanding and apply a third coat of stain, after that if it doesn't look good I will have to see if I can get paint to stick to it,  I will not purchase this product again.

Very thick and hard to get an even color

We recently bought a cape cod designed home where the stairs to the second floor are front and center when you enter the house.  It's the first thing you see.  The previous owners did a quick and dirty paint job to make it look presentable for sale.  We knew we'd be stripping and staining these stairs someday.  Someday has arrived and I set about the stairs project.
Being a novice I researched every step I needed to take from the stripping compound I needed to the sandpaper I had to use and, finally, the color and type of stain. I was familiar with the Minwax name so I paid special attention to your products.
One of my weak spots was the application.  I read about splotchy patches and definitely wanted to avoid that.  I looked at various instructions on the Minwax site and even checked out several YouTube video's on the subject.  The Pre-Stain Conditioner was highly recommended to avoid the splotching so I bought and used it.  So far so good.  
The steps looked good and ready for stain.  But right away the warning about not letting the stain dry reared its ugly head.  First step looked bad.  OK, revise your technique.  Second step not any better.  Revise again.  Third step same.  Revise again.  OK, better.  Fourth, fifth, sixth step marginal.  By the time I got to the bottom the whole project looked awful to me.  
The problem is that the water based stain dries too fast for this application.  Even when I laid on thick coats, kept brushing back to the start point to keep the first area wet, and wiped off the excess with long step wide strokes the splotching could not be overcome.
At this point I would like to find out how I can correct this.  So expect a call for advice.  Meanwhile, for you other novices I would certainly think twice about using the water based stain.  I'm thinking oil based is the way to go.

This water based stain is difficult to work with

I bought this product to stain a desk top.  After following the instructions of applying the stain then wiping it within 2 minutes found it made a blotchy mess.  Then I tried applying a coat and not wiping it off it was better but still streaked. This is nothing like the old Minwax stain I am used to.  I also checked this website for a video of how to apply and I found nothing.  In the future I will just a good paint and and save myself a lot of frustration.

Very Disappointed

Great that it's tintable and I do love the color selection but it's truly awful to work with. It dries too fast like a bad nail polish. Doesn't blend at all. Looks so bad that I'm considering painting over it. I highly do not recommend and will be switching back to oil based.

Awful

This stuff is extremely thick (like a paint). I planned on using this to stain a guitar body for a custom build I was working on. I followed the directions to a tee and began wiping the product off after 1 minute. It dried extremely quick and unevenly, leaving me with a ghastly mess on a body that took me around 50 hours of work to build. Thank god it didn't penetrate too deep into the wood grain, so I was able to sand it off and salvage my work. I'm honestly not sure where this product would shine... I'm sure it has its uses, but unless you've worked with this before, you're probably not going to get the effect you desire.

Avoid This

What an awful product. Someone talked me into doing the stain because I was redoing the top of my table. It came out, absolutely awful. The stain is so thick even after I waited less than two minutes. It's the consistency of paint and after you brush it on it's like smearing it around. If you overlap, you can't get it even. Horrible and I'm so disappointed because this was some pretty wood I was working with.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have always loved Minwax products and this one is no exception. I have always used oil based stains for all my wood projects, so I was skeptical to try the water based product from Minwax, but I am so glad that I did try it. This product is great in many ways. It dries up quickly, It does not have that chemical smells as the oil based stains do and are so easy to clean. I highly recommend this product and you simply cant go wrong with it.
