The body is mostly plastic so it doesn't feel like a high end tool, but it does what it's supposed to do very well. I have not tried it on any hardwoods, but it it smooths your typical box store construction lumber in no time.

This is a beast of a hand tool.  I love how sharp the blades are and how smooth it is cutting across almost 6" of wood.  The motor is powerful and doesn't even care if it is hardwood.  I have cleaned up a bunch of old oak furniture  frames.  I have used them in cabinets and you would never know they were made out of used stock.  Walmart is a great place to shop and I know they stand behind their products.

6" electric planer - a very powerful tool.

This is a very good item im very impressed with this planer,as I plane alot of wood I've used it many times since I've received it and not been disappointed one time with it.i wouldn't hesitate to purchase other wen products.thank you wen.and walmart

Very happy with my wen planer

The 4 3/8 inch wide planar was a game changer for me.  You can plane 2 X 4 lumber in one stroke leaving a perfectly smooth surface.  I use it mostly for paint removal and restoration of aged 2 X 4 deck handrails, which it does in seconds.  No hours of sanding, no sanding dust, and no paint removing chemicals.  Don't ever spend your money on one of those useless 3 1/4 inch planners, which leave a 1/4 inch un-planed strip on a 2 X 4, requiring a second pass that can never match the perfect planing of a single stroke.

You will never buy a 3 1/4 inch planar again

Great electric wood planer

Really happy with this purchase. It will take a bit of practice to get it down smoothly when going over large pieces of  wood that are wider then the tool but it saved me a lot of time and sanding on the first thing I used it on. You need to be careful to not push down on the front when the front shoe drops off the work piece. Keep the pressure on the back half behind the blades until the blades have cleared the work piece, otherwise you'll get a gouge right before the end.

This will be a great time saver.

Cutting blades broke during first use and no they weren't turned too far down and catch too much wood and no there were no nails at all or Staples. It was on the very first setting and the blades still broke. I do not recommend this product.
