I find it works well, detecting AC down to 12V(typically, I use it for 110V). You can also use it as a flashlight, which is a great feature when your head is in a panel.

This is such a neat little device and one I think everybody who owns a house should have in there tool kit. I needed to replace some light fittings and sockets throughout my house and I'm not an electrician but this little device has proved to be very valuable a couple of times already . Great  Handy Voltage Detector
