This is the best sewing machine ever ... I've owned a couple of regular sewing machines. I absolutely love all the different stitches it does and the monogramming is an added bonus. As long as you follow the instructions and use the recomended foot for the stitch that your doing you won't have the problems of breaking needles. I've only had it for a couple of weeks and I love it will update if I start having problems.

I have been looking for a decent sewing machine for several months now. I have used a couple of higher end machines that belong to my sewing teacher. I love the electronic machines with all the fun stitches. However looking into the price range in said machines was a little sobering. I had not heard very good things about Brother until I started researching. This machine is lightweight enough to take to class on a weekly basis. It does not come with a carry case but fits well in my universal case (also bought at Wal-Mart). The manual is very well written with clear instructions. As far as I have used it it works well, easily set up and quickly. I especially like the needle threader - my sight is not as clear as it once was. It comes with several feet (walking foot, button hole, zipper foot as well as others for monogramming and others) I do a fair bit of quilting so I was very appreciative of the extra quilting notions. It is nice to be able to have a set stitch and then adjust as need be. I can't say enough about the manual - I keep it close by and refer to it often. There are so many functions I am constantly checking it for the next step. If you are in the market I highly suggest this machine. By buying it online and picking it up at the store I saved $20 - then spent it on the 3 year protection plan. I have heard that after a period of time the tension can be an issue, so the protection plan. So far so good for now.

Good machine for the price

Have this machine for about a month and I absolutely love it, it easily went through 8 layers of knit fabric! love the free motion quilting! has some really cute decorative designs great for doing borders, monogramming was fun to play with...lots of accessories, definitely worth the price!!!

Amazing

This is the first Brother I have owned. So far so good. I have been sewing for 40 years and am impressed with the features I have tried. I do wish the light above the needle was brighter, dimmer than what I am used to. Nice not having to hold my bobbin thread when I start sewing and that I can program it for needle up or down when I stop each time.

Great sewing machine for the price.

For the money this sewing machine cost. It is the best that I found. It so far does the jobs that I want to do. I priced other machines with most of the same features and found that this machine is a much better machine, some of the machines I looked at cost as much as a good used car had features on them that most of us in every day use would never use. So why spend that kind of money on something that you more than likely would ever use. I really like the Brother SQ9050.

Couldn't be happier easy to use not a single problem so far. I'm a quilter and use my machine everyday. Have recommended machine to my friends that need a new one.

Love my new sewing machine

I loved several features on this sewing machine. I had never had a machine that I didn't need to use a foot pedal, but this one has a start/stop button with just the push of your finger. The additional quilting table you can attach is also a very nice additional feature. This machine does many things at a reasonable price.

Great machine, easy to use.

Shipping time was way faster than I expected. I already owned one of these and bought this for my mom. Ordered as pickup from store but that was canceled due to not available. Reordered and expected it in a week and it showed up two days later. Good machine, the needle threading gimmick is stupendous. Button holes are a piece of cake. Sews buttons on too. Foot change is fast. Easy thread change... Like I said, a nice piece of machinery. The alphanumeric feature is a bit lame. Good for putting a kids name on clothing for ID, but it's not gonna impress anyone.

Very Satisfied

I bought this machine because of its features and light weight. I need something to carry to classes and that I can use in our motorhome. Its Fonts are a nice bonus. It would be a great machine to learn or teach one to sew, also. I test sampled all of the stitches and found them to be accurate. Anyone who has trouble with this machine may need coaching on fabrics, stabilizers, etc. I love my little Brother.

Best little machine you can get for the money.

This seems to be a really good sewing machine of average value. I bought it for my wife for Christmas because her Singer of 31 years has died. She likes this Brother for the most part. But I had to return it because the clearance from the needle to the machine (the throat) is half the distance and height of her old Singer. This seems to be a trend with sewing machines now. My wife loves creating and sewing baby blankets and quilts. The clearance makes it really tough for her to maneuver her blankets and quilts. It looks like we'll have to step up $$$$ to a quilting machine and she feels she doesn't need all those features. She liked the way this Brother 9050 sewed and it was really quiet compared to her old Singer. The automatic threader was more trouble than threading the machine manually, but she admits she might need more time learning how to do it. I was disappointed in the font. It's so small (about 3/8") it's virtually useless and it's just a plain block style font. Although this seems to be a good machine, we were very disappointed in the lack of clearance in the throat and find the uses of the machine not very versatile for many different types of sewing projects!

Good performing sewing machine.

First of all, I know to not expect too much out of a lower end machine from a box store. My machine only stitched patchwork together for a quilt, so nothing more than 4 layers of fabric went under the presser foot at one time.

I had originally purchased this machine to learn how to sew and learn how to quilt. I had the machine for approximately 3 months and noticed very odd behavior/attributes of the machine that really disturbed me.

One day, I was sewing through four layers of cotton (very thin) fabric. Using a size 80 needle and noticed the machine was actually FLEXING when the needle would penetrate the fabric. I ended up taking the machine to a local sewing repair shop (they do not sell machines). They opened the machine up to find that the machine lacks a frame to hold all of the various parts of the machine. All of the parts lay in "troughs" inside the machine. What does this mean? If you ever sewed a hem on a pair of jeans, the needle assembly and camshaft assembly would shatter the plastic casing causing the machine to literally self destruct.

Before buying this machine, grasp the free arm and the top of the machine and push them in opposite directions - you can actually move the needle to where it will go more than 1/4" in front or in back of the throat plate stitch hole. What does this mean? If the machine flexes, the needle will hit the plate and send a needle fragment toward you - potentially causing injury!

I would suggest purchasing a Brother machine from a dealer - not a retail store. You will spend slightly more but get a machine that will last a lifetime! The features of this machine are very good, but I simply cannot recommend a machine that is made so cheaply and so incredibly poor. Lightweight equals no metal parts to hold the machine together when sewing through medium to heavyweight fabrics. Don't say I didn't warn you!

This machine is a TOY.
