Cobra Handheld CB Radio is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 38.
Rated 3 out of 5 by Anonymous from Nice, not thrilling but nice Okay, I get it...its a hand held. But, still I would only call this product "okay." It's easy to use. Range is about 1/2 mile with standard rubber duck and is the same with the HA-TA so don't bother buying the additional antenna. Its good for outdoor activities when you and your group will be within a half mile of each other. Its also good for a bug out situation when two vehicles are required and cell phones are down. NOAA channels come in poorly. The display light is very dim. And, if you are near sighted you'll never be able to see anything on the screen without a magnifying glass. I just threw it in my bug out bag.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Anonymous from Talked up to 8 miles away I have had this for a month and primarily use it in my truck along with the 18 inch cobra antenna. I could get about a good 1.5 to 2 mile clear talking and received further away. I decided to buy a little Wilson 36 inch antenna and was able to get further out and talk to people 8 miles away on clear night in city use. They could not believe I was talking on this handheld. The only downside is you do get a lot of static from power lines but you can turn squelch up. I am going to try the 42 inch telescoping antenna next to see how far I can get standing outside.. Over all I am happy with product and made it more addicting to license and scanning channels in the city..

Rated 4 out of 5 by Anonymous from Great Hand-Held CB Radio The Cobra HH 38 WX ST is a hand-held, 40 channel, AM only CB radio. It is packed full of features that you can read about in the manual or here on the store page, so here's some things I've noticed. First the good - Overall the product feels like a quality item. The packaging was professional, the radio works properly, the plastic doesn't feel cheap and the buttons don't feel mushy, so overall, it just "feels" like a good product. - My Cobra 148s are not SoundTracker capable, so I have never had a chance to mess with SoundTracker until purchasing this radio. It does help some with received signals. I'm not sure what it could do to my transmitted signal to help me "punch" through noise like it claims except maybe change the carrier/modulation ratio in hopes of helping get your voice through the hash and trash. On received signals though it does help a little bit with pulling them through the noise. It kind of makes them sound a little over-modulated when it is enabled, but if you're having trouble understanding them, it does help a little. - It uses a BNC connector which means that with the proper adapter you can connect it to external coax to use on a normal CB radio antenna in your car or in your house. - It comes with a rubber ducky antenna that attaches to the BNC connector on the top of the radio. - The screen is backlit, but doesn't remain that way all the time so it doesn't drain battery power. There is a button specifically for turning on the backlight for a few seconds so you can see the screen in the dark. - It has an external speaker jack and an external microphone jack so you can clip it on your belt and use a compatible headset or ear piece to communicate without having to hold the radio up to your ear. This could also be used in conjunction with a BNC->SO239 adapter to use the radio as a temporary base station or car radio without having to pick up the unit and flex or kink your coax. - It takes 9 AA batteries and has a charging port for re-charging batteries while they are in the radio instead of having to remove them to charge them. It can use normal, non-rechargeable batteries as well obviously, but it's nice that it includes a port for a charging cable. - The "Power Saver" function does actually decrease the carrier strength of the radio, which proportionately also decreases the strength of the signal as a whole and consumes less energy when you transmit. This is also handy if you're just using it around a small area and don't want to blow each other away by using a full 4 watts when you're only a couple hundred feet apart. I connected the radio to my base station antenna with a watt meter and measured right around a 4 watt carrier on normal and a little bit above 1 watt while in "Power Saver" mode. - The weather band channels to pick up surprisingly well on the antenna provided that's tuned for 27 MHz and not the 150 MHz range the weather channels are found on. - The "Dual Watch" and "Channel Scan" functions are incredibly handy, especially if you're often on different job sites that use different channels and you're not sure where people are talking at, or if different areas of the same site use different channels and you need to monitor 2 channels at once. - The belt clip is removable, so if it breaks you can buy a new one and just snap it on. - The "Lock" button is another incredibly useful feature that keeps you from bumping a button and changing channels or something while you're wearing the radio. With "Lock" enabled, you can transmit, receive, and adjust the volume/squelch, but that's it. The "Lock" button is also recessed and must be held for 2-3 seconds to activate, which means you won't accidentally unlock your keys. Now the bad - The only real negative point I have for this product is the power/charger setup. The HH 38 has two separate power connectors; one for powering the radio, and one for charging the batteries. They are different sizes and rated for different voltages. Additionally, it only comes with a "power" cord, not a charger, which means you have to purchase the cord that charges the batteries separately. This is probably because they assumed most people would just use normal batteries and not need it, but it would have been nice to toss in the charging cable as a bonus, or work the charger and power functions together with perhaps a switch in the battery compartment to select normal or re-chargeable batteries. (I've seen this feature in other hand-held CBs) - This negative point isn't really a negative point about the radio itself, but about the state of hand-held CBs in general. My wife and I use SSB channels on our Cobra 148s to communicate locally when one of us is out around town and the other one is home. SSB allows us to communicate a little bit further and get around/through some of the noise that comes out during daylight hours. Having the option to go to upper or lower side band has made it much much easier to find quiet spaces to talk where we don't bother other people and we can get through the white noise that clutters up AM when you're near fluorescent lights or when the sun is high in the sky. This hand-held, and every other hand-held CB radio on the market right now, is AM only, and I would absolutely love to see an SSB capable hand-held CB radio from a big player in the market like Cobra. In summary, this is a great product. It's got features other hand-held CB radios don't have and I purchased it to replace another radio of another brand that I had that got wet and stopped functioning. It feels and operates like a quality product and does exactly what the store page says it does. This product is the same radio that you get with the "Road Trip", but without the magnet mount antenna. It does surprisingly well if you use it out in the open as well. I did a radio check with somebody on a base station about 3 miles away on the other side of a mountain using the provided rubber ducky, and for a hand-held radio on that small of an antenna, you couldn't really ask for more. When I connected it to my base station antenna and did a radio check or two with it, people said it sounded almost as good as my Cobra 148 GTL. I am pleased with this purchase and will continue recommending Cobra's CB radio products to my friends.

Rated 4 out of 5 by katekebo from decent handheld CB This is a very decent handheld CB radio. I have two and use them when hiking and as back up communication when travelling. The radio puts out full 4W when connected to externatl 12V power supply, and 2-3W when running on AA batteries. Transmission and reception is good even with the rubber duck antenna, and with a full-size magnet mount antenna it performs as well as a mobile CB. The weather channels are a usefull feature, especially when hiking / camping, but recenption with the rubber duck antenna is hanpered because it is tuned to a different frequency range. But overall, it is probably the best handheld CB you can buy, and the price is just right.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Anonymous from Excellent Portable/Mobile Handheld CB This unit is quite good. I have it because it's portable. I carry it hunting, fishing, hiking, highway long distance, about town and at home. Great if you happen to be somewhere there is no cell service. Very handy. For highway use, to get better range, Cobra sells outside magnetic 42" antennas under accessories on their product page. Works great! I like the face I can plug it into 12v vehicle outlet or use mobile with batteries.
