Ratings & Reviews+

Danby 5,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner is rated 3.4 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from HIGH VALUE FOR LOW PRICE I bought mine several months ago when it was on sale. Mine is vented through a window and the room I have it in is larger than the recommended size, but it keeps it very cool AS LONG as you follow certain guidelines; keep all windows in the room covered with either insulated curtains or drapes or reflective, room darkening blinds, keep any doors to the room closed at all times ( I installed a vinyl folding door between this room and the kitchen, but had to lay a long, home-made door stop to keep the bottom from pulling in because the compressor fan pulls so much air: next year, I'll replace it with a glass insert wood door), run the unit on HIGH to cool the room quickly, then reduce speed to MID or LOW and use an oscillating fan to help move the air around ( a ceiling fan on LOW is even better). Some buyers complain that it's too noisy, but I find that the noise level is equal to a window unit running at the same speed. I like to have it running when I go to bed because it acts as a white noise generator and helps me to sleep. Also, the lighted display window doubles as a night-light! The major advantage is the relative ease in connecting the unit: follow the directions and once it's in place, you'll realize, as I did, that it's far better than a window unit in that you don't need help to install it. I intend to buy a second one to replace the 5000btu window unit I have in the kitchen area which will eliminate the work necessary to install and remove it every year. Another one is the fact that at the end of the cooling season, all you have to do is open the window ( or sliding door ), remove the vent kit and close, remove the vent hose, roll up the power cord and put the entire unit in a closet until next year ( don't forget to clean the filters first ). One very important fact to consider BEFORE buying is that the drain hose has to drain INTO something ( I use a rectangular 15L plastic pail ) AND has to be monitored and emptied on a regular basis or else you'll have water everywhere. This must be done ESPECIALLY if you intend to use the unit as a dehumidifier as well as an air-conditioner.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from What to do if I do not have the remote control My landlord just gave this AC to me for this summer. It is running great, the problem is that my landlord lost the remote control and besides turning on and off, I can't set the temperature nor mode. If anyone knows where can I buy the remote for this? Or would the universal remote control work for this? Thanks

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not energy efficient -- it sucks in hot air All portable air conditioners have one fatal flaw. Since they blow the heat out the window they create negative air pressure in the room or apartment. Air has to come in from somewhere. That means it sucks in hot air from outside. So while you are cooling you are bringing more hot air into the room. That wastes electricity. A window air conditioner does not do this if you set it to circulate where it only circulates the air in the room.
