<p>En las últimas décadas se han registrado en el agro ecuatoriano interesantes experiencias de economía solidaria a nivel local y regional; de ahí el interés por el debate sobre la validez actual del modelo comunitario-cooperativista latinoamericano. En este trabajo se realiza un análisis retrospectivo de su evolución en Ecuador durante el siglo XX, así como de las interrelaciones existentes con los modelos de desarrollo adoptados por el país, bajo los condicionamientos cíclicos del capitalismo mundial. El estudio pone en evidencia los esfuerzos realizados por el movimiento cooperativista para superar el carácter puramente gremialista y asistencial que predominó en su origen y convertirse en una alternativa económica y financiera para los sectores más desposeídos. Las experiencias presentadas demuestran que lo comunitario debe ir más allá de la propiedad común de bienes pues implica un modo diferente de relación entre personas, basado en valores comunes y en un proyecto compartido. Al rescatar la dimensión solidaria de lo comunitario, y rompiendo la racionalidad del mercado, se han conformado organizaciones que comparten sus riquezas y las distribuyen de acuerdo a las necesidades.</p><br/><p>Doctora en Ciencias Políticas, Universitá Internazionale degli Studi Sociali, Roma.
