Ratings & Reviews+

Eagle Brand® Dulce De Leche Caramel Flavoured Sauce is rated 2.0 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Dulce de Leche This Is NOT! Big mistake buying this DDL! The consistency and flavour are nowhere near even the cheapest brand in Argentina or Uruguay. My suggestion is: Don't waste your money on this product and depending on where you live, search around for any brand from one of the above mentioned countries, it's guaranteed to be far superior than this product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Definitely NOT "Dulce de Leche" I don't know who at Eagle Brand is in charge of research, but the only way this product resembles dulce de leche is its color. The consistency is exactly like a syrup--it's most certainly not a spread and can't be used to put on toast or a cracker. You can use this to pour on your ice cream, maybe. The taste--yuck--is a cloying butterscotch flavor. I bought a can of this stuff to use in an alfajor (sandwich cookie) recipe and had to throw it out. It's astonishing that this company markets this product as "dulce de leche"--it's like selling pomegranate syrup as raspberry jam; not even in the same ballpark.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Faster than do it yourself, but not the right flavour I started simmering cans of sweetened condensed milk into dulce de leche recently; it takes a few hours of patient waiting and occasional checking, but the results are amazing! I was pleased to see Eagle Brand selling dulce de leche for about the same price as the regular cans, so I bought one to test. I'm disappointed in their product though. The colour is what I expected, but the caramel flavouring is not the same as cooking it myself, and it starts to feel chemical in taste, not natural. To cook at home, I put as many cans as I can fit into a big pot and add water so they're covered by a couple of inches of water. Then bring the water to a bubble, but not boil, for 3-5 hours, ensuring they stay underwater the entire time. By 5 hours it's nearly solid enough to cut into squares and eat with fingers, and the bottom part is harder and somewhat crystallized. Stopping at 4 hours is my favourite, it will pour slowly and has a very rich flavour. Next time I will lay the cans on their sides, and roll them occasionally, I think that will avoid the crystallizing at the bottom of the can.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I simmer this can for 3 hours and advise that you lay the can on its side with 2 inches of water above it . Check every 1/2 hour the water level . You should get good results .
