Description & Features+

Yokohama, 1963. Umi is a high school student living in her family?s hillside home overlooking the sea. Every morning she hoists two signal flags towards the bay, sending a message to the horizon. A poem about the flags is published in the school newspaper. Could the author be Shun, the daring newspaper editor who has drawn Umi?s attention? While the two teenagers join in the campaign to save their school?s old clubhouse, their budding relationship takes an unexpected turn when they discover a secret surrounding their past. In a Japan at the crossroads of tradition and modernization, Umi and Shun share a moving story of friendship, love and hope. The film?s rich and vibrant imagery captures perfectly the thrills of young romance and the hope of a new dawn.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful Movie I love all of the Hayao Miyazaki movies and this one, is a very good movie. A very well written story about the boy and girl buried secrets from their past. This movie is for all ages who love Hayao Miyazaki movies. A good one to buy and collect.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A Touching Romance Studio Ghibli films seem to always have a great time with character interactions and attention to detail, this one is no exception. Goro Miyazaki made me cringe with how boring Tales of Earthsea was, but with his father Hayao on the screenplay, and a very different scope than Tales, Goro has redeemed himself in the directors' chair. It's always hard for me to describe Ghibli films because they have so very little plot typically. In this one there are two stories - a boy and a girl falling in love, and a school club house that is being slated for demolition. It does have more to it than that, and what challenges their relationship is not the typical love triangle set-up we've seen over and over. What is also amazing here is how the characters deal with those obstacles. There are no overly-dramatic misunderstanding 'he/she' lied scenes that will invariably be corrected, nor does the tension in their relationship interfere with them mutually trying to save the clubhouse. The music in this one is what I would call "ecclectic", having the feel of Paris in some parts, 60's Japan in others, and its own more subdued tracks in line with works from Joe Hisaishi. Even with that in mind, the music is paired very well to the scenes they're featured in, so it never hurt the atmosphere. This movie is a strong breath of fresh air, but if I have any warning to parents, it is to be prepared for your kids asking questions after the fact.
