Ratings & Reviews+

Gunsmoke: The Directors Collection is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Interesting collection of Gunsmoke episodes These fifteen episodes of Gunsmoke--ranging from the first to the last (20th) season--are unique in the emphasis upon the director. They feature seven commentaries, including ones by Dennis Weaver ("Chester") and Peter Graves (James Arness' younger brother). Others are noted feature movie directors such as Robert Stevenson, Arthur Hiller, Andrew V. McLaglen, and Mark Rydell, as well as William Conrad, the radio voice of Matt Dillon. The commentaries focus more on the reminiscences than the craft of these individuals, but many are dealing with memories of 50 or so years in the past. The majority of episodes were shot in black and white, but this adds a certain air of grittiness found in the American West. This should appeal greatly to those who grew up with TV westerns, but hopefully may introduce younger viewers to a classic television show and a genre which is sorely neglected today.
