Ratings & Reviews+

LEGO® Technic - Bucket Wheel Excavator (42055) is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 53.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Really Awesome Set! Well, having just finished the build, I can say this is a truly worthy 'Flagship' Technic set. First of all - the build. I took over 1 week, just building sections at a time. The parts come in numbered bags (1-8), thank you Lego - this really does help building. The instructions are in one HUGE book. The sections of the instructions relate to the bags. Two nice inovations in these instructions. Where small parts are added to a large section of the model, white outine 'windows' are added to highlight where the parts go - nice touch! Also, on one or two pages, the main model is greyed out, leaving only a section in plain colour to highlight the new parts. Very good! At the end of the instructions the controls are explained. This layout is also new - and very clear. The build is complex. I managed to make a mistake on stage 4; and had to dismantle the model to put in a missed out gear wheel. I managed this twice! So; check that the axles and gears are connected and doing something before proceeding! A small criticism is that, on the build of the bucket arm (stage 6), the conveyor belt support structure is rather weak until the re-inforcing side is finished. Care is needed with this stage not to bend or break parts. When complete the structure is very strong. Also adding the bucket arm to the main structure is fiddly. Four hands might help with this stage! When complete the kit is really impressive. I particularly like the attention to detail in this kit. Not only an operators cabin, but ladders, walkways, and lights are added all over the model. It adds a sense of scale and completeness to the model. Value for money? Yes! Although expensive you do get a lot for your money. Apart from the fun building and playing with the set, there are a huge number of parts. I would certainly recommend this set to anyone who likes Technic Lego.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great job Lego Designers Just finished this project and I have to say. WOW! Can't believe how big it was once it was done. The detail all the way down to the "flood lights" was great. I enjoy the models with a lot of gears and motorized moving parts. So if you like lots of moving parts you will really enjoy making this Lego model.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brilliant! Thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of this LEGO set, instructions are nice & clear & easy to follow. There are only 2 negatives, 1: Forward & reverse is quite jerky as is the bucket wheel. 2. The large LEGO pieces provided for the bucket wheel drop out the bucket late & miss the conveyor, they instead land between the wheel & the conveyor causing a jam, only the small pieces are suitable. This model makes the ultimate show piece in my display cabinet! I look forward to their next "big" creation! Oh...& I slightly modified the drivers cab to accommodate a construction mini figure even though he's not actually to scale, looks cool though!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from excellent builb Had a real blast building this thing. I would highly recommend the kit to anyone. I had read that some builders were having trouble with the wheel and belts stopping , or getting caught by something from time to time . I read the review during the build so I was paying particular attention to the movement as I went along, and found that I had the same problem as I spun the wheel and belts slowly by hand . What I found was a yellow shaft right at the front end of the upper belt had been pushed in just a little too far and it was catching on one of the grouser bars on the belt (cross bars that catch the material going on the belt.)It did not catch on all of them. I pushed the shaft back just a little and now with the machine complete, I have no problems with movement at all. Again a great build. I am having a problem finding plans for a 2 in 1 build that I did a few years ago though. I built crane 42009 , and I'm looking to build the two machines that you can build out of it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding Set This set is definitely one of the best I have ever assembled and I have built a ton. While building, it never ceased to be amaze me at the engineering that went into he design of this set. I was sceptical of the operation but it does operate well. This is also and incredible value, as you'll see how massive it is.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This thing is HUGE!! I tossed up between this and the overpriced Porsche (42056). Even after reading some of the reviews about how slow it is, it doesn't work etc. I still choose this bad boy for the sheer size and number of parts and value for money. over 3 nights (11 hours total) this monster was complete. Now I was thinking about the other reviews when it came time to fire this beast up. KAPOW!! It lives, the bucket wheel turns perfectly along with the conveyor belt and it rotates with no issues at all. Yes, it is slow when moving forward or backwards, but so what its HUGE! The finished A model is a beast but is very sturdy. You can carry this thing by holding the top part of the arch. A couple of other things to note: The lower conveyor belt lock slides like +30 to -30 degrees. The control panel has many functions. But the operation is limited. You cannot mix any rotation with linear movement. i.e. The bucket wheel cannot rotate when the excavator is moving forward. Don’t let a few reviews put you off (I didn’t). This monster is a must have for any Technic Fan.
