I chose to treat it a few times with vegetable shortening, baking in the oven for an hour at 350 degrees, upside down each time. Make sure it's on the center rack with a cookie sheet below on the bottom rack. Have a fan on and a door and/or window open. 
     Tried it the next day with pancakes. I had the heat on high for 2-3 minutes before lowering it to a high-medium. I kept an eye on the flame and the heat of the griddle. I got pancakes lighter than others and pancakes darker than others, but never undercooked or overdone. This product made good pancakes.

Much better than you might think

Steaks, burgers, fish and "blackened" recipes are delicious when cooked on cast iron.
Just get the griddle smoking hot and flip the meat once, that's it. To clean: let the griddle cool, scrub it with hot water (no soap!), dry and put a very light coating of oil on it (I like Crisco).

Have found I prefer using cast iron over all other products.

Cast iron is great and Lodge is the best.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] No more no-stick coated surfaces for me. Treat cast iron right and it's just as no-stick, and it sears and browns perfectly. I have an induction cooktop (and need cast iron or steel), and I'm not convinced the corners of my square griddle get hot enough, but it's a simple trick to turn grilled sandwiches 180 degrees halfway through.

Pancakes didn't stick. Heats great like all cast iron. Looking forward to grilled sandwiches. Easy to clean with hot water and cast iron cleaning brush, dry by the same method as cooking. After it's dried and hot put about half teaspoon of vegetable oil on it and coat pan. I just let mine sit until it cools I use lard on my cast iron.

Great non-stick griddle.

This griddle did not work well for pancakes on a 10-inch induction stove burner because the corners would not get hot enough. It worked very well to sear thick steaks on a gas grill's side burner after I slowly smoked them on the grill.

Not great on induction; great on gas.

I have wanted one of these for years but was also realistic about what it could deliver on my conventional cook top stove.

The square shape affords you certain luxuries in terms of workspace area. You can put 4 pancakes or 4 pieces of French toast up at once, or any 4 slices of bread.

I use a much longer spatula with this which is nice. I make a potato crisp dish with this frying pan (square griddle) which makes it easier to get in from the side of my shredded potatoes and flip them over. Great for hash browns, too.

Some drawbacks. The griddle is so large that one large burner has difficulties heating up the entire surface area. I tested this out with some fresh cut bacon. Now while the entire slice fits nicely in the griddle without having to cut the bacon up, the ends were difficult to get done at the same rate as the middle, even after moving them around.

The griddle is thick, thicker than a conventional cast iron frying pan. You have to heat it a little more slowly and longer for good, even heat. Turn it on right away if you intend to use it.

The person who will get the absolute most use from this griddle is a person who owns one of those stoves with the huge, double middle burner (gas) and this would be the perfect combo. Also, camp cooks and grill cooks alike would love this pan.

Different but good!

Tried it on an induction cooktop. put some water in it to see how it boiled. It only boiled in a circle, no boiling in the center or edges. Put the pan, dry, on the cooktop and heated it for 30 minutes to allow the pan to conduct heat to the edges. The edges were over 110 degrees cooler than the center.

Returned the pan.

Poor Excuse for a Griddle

This was a gift for my son in law.  He wanted to replace and old griddle.  Seems to like it.

Very nice griddle with handle.

Very heavy griddle will last for a life time.
