I was so tired of not being able to get good pictures of my child's performances in a gymnasium or auditorium so I decided to buy this camera. I have only had the opportunity to use it at one function so far, but I couldn't be happier! : ) The pictures are very sharp and clear, the colors are right on and the shutter speed was fast enough that I didn't miss any shots. I wish I had purchased a Nikon DSLR years ago! I can't wait to take a class so that I can learn how to fully use all of the bells and whistles. I bought this on Black Friday so the price was incredible also. If you are tired of never getting a good picture of your children's shows and activities at school, or just with everyday activities, treat yourself to being able to preserve those precious memories with this camera....I did :)

Because of all the dSLR and lens choices, I was concerned I would either buy too advanced or not advanced enough. The d5100 with the non-VR seems to have hit my sweet spot. Manual settings are super easy to use and produce quality pics. And there are plenty of advanced features to keep me learning and growing as a photographer for many years.

I've used the long exposure settings to take some cool water pics with a tripod. A recent ice storm in Dallas provided some really great shots. Next family get-together I'll be trying out the indoor portrait techniques.

I really like this camera.

Ease of use for beginner plus advanced features

She searched for the longest time and all she wanted was THAT camera. She knew just what she was looking for and she got it. I'm not a camera expert but for what she told me, it's PERFECT. I try to use it w/o reading the booklet and it was OK, but still need to go deeply into it. For me a camera is a camera, but when looking at the pictures, you can see the difference in the product.
Hope we can enjoy the camera for a long time.

Great camera and easy to use! I really like how the menu options are set up compared to other brands in the same price range. Also this is the USA version which means you have a NIKON warranty in the USA instead of getting a European model supported by an aftermarket warranty company known as an 'gray market' or 'import model'.

I have read more articles and camera reviews before buying my gr8 Nikon D5100.
Low noise / picture quality/ depth of the pixels / good battery life..
And it has all the features with this cost :)!

Please update firmware A&B once you get the product, it will improve the performance and battery!
A 1.02 - improves the battery, now we can take ~700 shots.

Awesome Camera!

One of the best digital cameras I own. Although I've been a professional photographer for 50+ years, I can't justify purchasing some of the higher-end cameras. In my estimation, this camera (in the $500-$600 price range) is probably the best bang for the buck.

I purchased it primarily so I could frame photos in the LCD screen instead of having to use the viewfinder. Since the LCD screen swivels it can be used to shoot over crowds or down at ground level without having to kill yourself trying to look through the viewfinder.

I absolutely LOVE my new camera! I take it everywhere with me! The on time, (from being off to switching on and photo ready), is great, so you won't have to worry about missing those "perfect photo" moments. Lots of customization capabilities and a big perk for me, since I'm a beginner, is that the Auto mode works like a charm! Its great!
I'm going to include a couple photos I took while hiking Mt. Mitchell, NC, taken in landscape mode and with the 18-55mm lens that is normally included with this camera.
The autofocus is my best friend hahaha, but you've got a choice for manual or auto focus, plus, Nikon has tons of lenses to experiment with! Ahh! So exciting!
Overall, I couldn't be happier with my purchase... If you're stuck on the fence between cameras, I highly, highly recommend this camera. Its great for the price and you won't be let down!

Accidentaly, I bought a Nikon D5100 with AF-S lenses instead of VR ... I realised only when I unpacked it & took few telephoto shot using 55-200 mm lense. The photos are little blur unless one learns to control the hand vibration ... 18-55 mm lense really gave great shots.

Great DSLR camera

I have no complaints on this camera at all. Takes great pictures! Can be as easy as you want or you can take total control of all settings. Scene modes are useful for different situations you encounter. The effects modes work well too. I have already taken better pictures than I ever have in my life.

Amazing deal on this camera

Nikon D5100 could be really a great camera for beginner and getting in black Friday deal in low price with additional 55-200 mm lens is a bonus. however this lens is non-vr guess. Since i got Nikon D7000 so I did no left with any choice except to return D5100 that was my primary choice in low budget before I got D7000 in hand. I did not use much so ca not comment on battery life.
