Description & Features+

"North & South" - As the daughter of a middle-class parson, Margaret Hale has enjoyed a privileged upbringing in rural southern England. But when her father uproots the family, she is forced to adapt to a new life in Milton - a northern mill town in the throes of the industrial revolution. Margaret is shocked by her new surroundings. Appalled by the dirt, noise and gruffness of the people of Milton, she saves her greatest contempt for the mill-owners. When John Thornton, charismatic proprietor of Marlborough Mills, becomes a 'pupil' of her father, she makes her distaste for this vulgar and uneducated new class abundantly clear. Over time, Margaret's attitude towards the mill workers begins to change and she joins their workplace struggles against poverty and disease. But will she ever change her view of their employers - in particular, one who has secretly become her admirer.

Ratings & Reviews+

North & South is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 29.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love It This a wonderful movie; worth the four hours it takes to watch it. Not just a romance, it is also a social commentary on the industrial age in England and how difficult that time period was for the factory owners and workers alike. I highly recommend it to Jane Austen lovers or lovers of classic literature!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from North & South The movie is a little more expensive than the movies I usually buy, but it was worth the price. I watched all 4 parts in one night. This is a great movie. I wish it had a sequel.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great movie from BBC I couldn't wait for it to come disk by disk from Netflix so I ordered it. It is a wonderful production and similar to Pride and Prejudice but with more to it than just a love story. Enjoyed it very much!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well Done, BBC This is the perfect mix of romance and story line. This was adapted from the book beautifully. And, like usual, the BBC did an amazing job. I originally watched this on Netflix and had to watch the entire 4 segments in one night. I laughed, I cried, and my heart skipped a few beats. Very well done. I would watch it again in an instant. This is why I am purchasing it. :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from North and South (in England) I love this movie and then had to buy the book and also found a sequel online, which is so romantic. The kiss on the train platform scene at the end has been played over and over again by me. Set during the Industrial Revolution in England this movie tells of a Vicar, his wife and daughter moving from the south of England to Milton (Manchester) in the north, where cotton mills pollute the air and give rise to UNIONS. John Thornton, Master of one mill, meets Margaret Hale when he goes to the vicar to further his education. Their relationship is reminiscent of that of Elizabeth and Darcy in P&P. This movie is not to be confused with North and South (American Civil War) by John Jakes.
