got this for my boyfriend for his birthday and we recently used it. HE LOVES IT!! Made the steak PERFECT!! And tender???? OMG YES!!! So easy to use. We didn't have a pot tall enough for it so he used his mixing bowl with zero problems.. he set the temp and time on his phone and we walked away...it was a perfect medium rare... can't wait to see what else he can do with it!!

I have wanted one of these for quite some time, then Walmart put this model on clearance... I couldn't resist. The item was well packaged (I'm going to store it when not in use in that factory box) and printed instructions, while brief, do point you in the right direction to download the app.
After downloading there were easy to follow directions on pairing the cooker to the app... and then conducting a test run. It took about 15 minutes for the cooker to heat the water from cool out-of-the-tap to 130'F. I then ran it for 30 minutes and monitored it with the app and it performed well. I double checked the cooking temp with a probe meter and it matched the app... just a precaution.
I found that even though I don't need access to Anova's cookbook and recipe's that are available with subscription I did subscribe ($9.99  tax annually) so I can monitor and control the cooker while I m working in my office and don't have to get up and go to the kitchen (mobility issues).
I had a few questions for Anova prior to purchase that weren't covered on their site and they responded within 2 days and satisfied me enough to make the purchase...

Close-out Item Surprise

I already own an Anova Nano 3.0 and couldn't pass up on this mini for $20. Alot of these reviewers are rating this product low because they arent paying attention that you do have to pay a subscription fee to access additional features like it shows BEFORE you purchase. I was grandfathered into the "free subscription" since I had my Anova account before they started charging a fee August 2024. Most of the app is garbage except the use of setting/monitoring temps over wifi if you don't want to use the Bluetooth and save a subscription fee. The accuracy of the mini is very good when comparing to my Nano. The setup of the mini took a bit and was difficult when trying to get it to connect to the app. Its nearly the same size as my nano, but doesnt have a digital screen. Everything is app controlled which I don't like, but I purchased this already knowing that information, so I can't really complain. I do prefer my Nano over the mini only because I can use it without the app. This is a very good buy that I'm happy with for $20, but I would never purchase at retail due to lack of a digital screen that I can physically control myself without an app.

Anova has decided to heavily rely on a subscription model for this product, which costs $2 per month. Not subscribing to the subscription limits functionality -  no screen, no push notifications, no WiFi access, and no updates. It connects via Bluetooth, and you can adjust the temperature and set a timer, but you need to keep the app open to receive alerts.

This is a sous vide machine, and the functionality for something like this should be based NOT BE on a subscription model. This decision is detrimental to Anova's brand.

Would Not Recommend - Limited by App Subscription

The device itself seems to work fine for cooking, but the app is awful. This wouldn't really be a big issue if there were any way to control the device without the app.

The cooker disconnects if the app is closed and it requires restarting the cooker or re-enabling phone Bluetooth to reconnect. It doesnt seem to have wifi connectivity, and bluetooth is the only connection method.

Furthermore, most of the actual features for the app (e.g. push notifications)  are behind subscription paywall, which has VERY aggressive pop ups.

Device is fine but app is borderline unusable

this product only works with an app u have to dowload and pay for.  It does not have any way of learning how to use it, even on the app. so no way to program it.  u need to choose their recipies for time and temps.
very user unfreindly.  price low bc of its a cheaper model needing a subscription to cook with.   im going elsewhere. food was cooked nicely, but the issues of learning the product gave me heartburn!

paid subscription needed to get the unit to work!

I bought this to replace an older version. This newer version can only be controlled via their app. The older version has app free controls on the device. In order to control this version via the app you need to pay for a digital subscription. The instructions claim that this device can be controlled via app without a subscription by using Bluetooth instead of WiFi, but my phone never detected this device via Bluetooth while being able to detect the older model via Bluetooth. I wasn't able to find any useful, recent support information from the manufacturer's site but found a video online where several people shared the same experience of being required to pay for a subscription while the “free” Bluetooth option does work.

Paid subscription required for use

No on device controls ... so one would think that Anova would make a reliable app to control their device line ... ah ... not so much.   You can pair it relatively easily, however the app won't stay connected to the device for monitoring.

I did discover a workaround for that, and I haven't used it enough to know if it's reliable.  When it won't connect, open a setting window for bluetooth, and forget the device.  When you go back to the Anova app, you'll probably be prompted to pair again.  YMMV.  Good Luck if your choosing this brand.

App Broken, which makes cook control impossible

Constantly gives low water warning on first use. I'm assuming that sensor is broken. Gives warning even when water level is at max.

Don't buy

You cannot use the sous vide without the app.  in order to create an account in the app, which is required, the app requires you to sign up for a trial of paid features, which will automaticcally charge you if you forget to cancel.
