Ratings & Reviews+

Philips Blu Ray Player is rated 2.2 out of 5 by 29.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from BE CAREFUL USB, HDMI and ethernet cables NOT INCLUDED. This is stated nowhere on the box and they cost additional. It also appears to be a wireless connection but it actually needs a wired connection. For me, I had to buy an ethernet cable. I read other reviews where people needed to by a dongle to get online. I only found this out after reading all 32 reviews, most negative. Wish I had checked online before seeing this in the store, which I thought would be a gem of a product, due to the price. The set-up manual was of no help, just a few pictures and no wording. I had to scour through dozens of Walmart reviews and go to the Best Buy website to find out how to set it up and what was REQUIRED to get it up and running. Took about three and a half hours and an additional trip back to the store for cables. I spent an extra $18 bucks for ethernet wiring (luckily I already had HDMI cable, here). I wish I had known this at the time of purchase, I just would have got a better model. It took me about 2 days to connect to Netflix. The remote is cute, but not very easy to operate, numerically. The picture and sound are of good quality, but with so much time and extra money invested, I just would have bought a different model. Something with more ease of use and with everything included in the box. Not sure yet if I'm going to return it. Good, I guess if you want it just as a blue ray player and not so much internet access. I wish I had done some internet research before being taken in by an eye-catching box at the store. Seemed too good to be true. It was.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst Player Ever This Blu-Ray Player is horrible. 1. Sometimes it will load the disc on command using the remote, sometimes you have to manually insert or remove it. 2. When a disk is playing, it responds slowly to fast forward or rewind or what ever command you may need. 3. When trying to stream Netflix, about 85% of the time it makes me set up Netflix over again. Once it finally gets it installed again, it is slow and very hesitant to commands. 4. When streaming or trying to get a disk out, it completely freezes to the point that I have to unplug it so that it resets itself. Overall, this is the worst Blu-ray/DVD player I have ever owned. I have changed battery's in the remote, replaced all wiring going to the player, tried Ethernet and wireless options and nothing has made this player work right.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very Good BR Player A friend of mine who is a Walmart Associate recommended this to me. A few recommendations: 1. Separately purchase CAT5 cable, HDMI Cable and Digital Coaxial Audio Cable as these items are not in the box with the BR Player. Make sure the cables are long enough. 2. Perform a Firmware update - Out of the box the BR Player had Firmware version 1.07. Version 2.15 was installed during the update. This BR player runs on Linux and Java - I don't know which is updated but the player accesses discs much faster and can playback more file formats than with the originally released firmware. Follow the On Screen directions - it takes 20 to 30 minutes to complete. 3. Use a CD/DVD Cleaning Disc after 15 to 20 playbacks. 4. Purchase the Walmart Product Service Plan / Care Plan. 'Cause ya never when -OOPS- something might go wrong ... It's cheap and if you really hate this BR Player -OOPS-

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Horrible...just horrible. I bought this blu-ray player for $58. We took it out of the box, installed it, and loaded a BRAND NEW, JUST OPENED blu-ray disc...nothing. We then tried a different disc to determine whether it was a disc issue or device issue...still nothing. After multiple tries with nothing but a black screen and an error message, we gave up; it was perfectly obvious that the only thing we'd be "watching" on this device would be the home screen. To make matters worse, there was NO owner's manual or troubleshooting guide included with this device. It's absolute junk of the lowest quality and will be returned ASAP.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from awful As others have said, this product borders on useless. It locks up constantly, and trying to watch anything on Netflix is a nightmare. In the last 2 hours alone I've had to unplug it three times and finally I disconnected it and will go back to using my Wii for Netflix. It is slow to respond to anything, and even the remote causes headaches. Every time a button is pushed it either acts too sensitively and thinks it's been pressed two or three times, or I have to nearly take a sledgehammer to it to get it to do anything. I wish I had come here to read reviews before I purchased it, and honestly this bluray player makes me glad the Philips TV I was going to buy was out of stock. I am going to return this tomorrow and will never buy another Philips product again. Sure, it's cheap and they say you get what you pay for, but this is the kind of activity I'd expect out of a $20 player, not $60.
