Description & Features+

By the 1970s, "pop" had become nearly synonymous with "rock" on the charts, as middle-aged, middle-of-the-road singers gave way to a new generation of performers singing lighter fare infused with a rock sensibility. This 17-track, 62-minute compilation of '70s hits presents a clutch of such "soft rock" performances, but, with a few exceptions, it could have been called Soft Rock Late 70s, since all but three of the tracks date from 1975 or later. (Somehow, Lobo's "I'd Really Love to See You Tonight" and Seals & Crofts' "Summer Breeze," both from 1972, and Neil Sedaka's "Laughter in the Rain" from 1974 snuck in there.) Typical of this sort of compilation, the selections tend to be big hits (including nine Billboard chart-toppers) by relatively minor figures or even one-hit wonders. So, this is not a definitive look at the era, but it is a reasonable sampling of original recordings, the sort of thing that might be heard on an hour's worth of a '70s oldies radio station or channel. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi
