Description & Features+

Acclaimed artist Yoshitoshi ABe ("Haibane Renmei," "Texhnolyze") brings to life the existential classic that paved the way for blockbuster films such as "The Matrix." "Close the World. Open the Next." Decades before the internet was something people carried around in their pockets, these words introduced anime fans to a surreal existence where computer monitors served as portals to brave new world. "Serial Experiments: Lain" and its deceptively "ordinary" title character redefined an entire generation's concept of the world wide web, prompting us all to suspiciously take note of humming power lines and central processing units. Follow along as fourteen year old Lain - driven by the abrupt suicide of a classmate - logs on to the Wired and promptly loses herself in a twisted mass of hallucinations, memories, and interconnected-psyches. "Close the World. Open the Next." It's as simple as the flip of a switch.

Ratings & Reviews+

Serial Experiments Lain: The Complete Collection (Blu-ray + DVD) is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hello, Navi Serial Experiments Lain is one of the sic-fi greats of anime. It has been ranked up there with Ghost in the Shell, Memories, and Akira. It is this anime alongside Ghost in the Shell that inspired the Matrix Trilogy and a variety of other similar series in the Japanese culture. The story follows an ordinary girl named Lain Iwakura as she receives an email from a classmate that committed suicide. From here, she learns about what exactly "The Wired" (The internet) is and who actually controls the amazing networking it entails. To say this anime is dated is putting it lightly. Many of the episodes have clearly been budgeted and do not reflect some of the great animation of the 90s, and that's why the Blu-ray exists. On comparing both copies, the blu-ray is noticeable much more vibrant and has better flow between cells. On top of this, it has the best title screen of any DVD I've ever seen. I highly recommend Lain for its almost 1984 predictions about what the Internet has become today and its fascinating look into what is to come.
