Description & Features+

"The Day The Earth Stood Still" depicts the arrival of an alien dignitary, Klaatu (Michael Rennie), who has come to earth with his deadly robot, Gort (Lock Martin), to deliver the message that earthlings must stop warring among themselves - or else. After being shot at by military guards, Klaatu is brought to a Washington, D.C. hospital, where he begs a sympathetic but frank Major White (Robert Osterloh) to gather all the world's leaders so he can tell them more specifically what he has come to warn them about. Losing patience, Klaatu slips into the human world, adapting a false identity and living at a boarding house where he meets a smart woman with a conscience and her inquisitive son. Both mother and son soon find themselves embroiled in the complex mystery of Klaatu, his message and the government's witch hunt for the alien.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is a classic for all time. Each new sci-fi generation should be required to view this iconic film and look at the entertaining and masterful way Hollywood portrayed the uncertainty and fears of the early Atomic Age.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Day the Earth stood still(orig-1951) DVD I saw this movie when I was younger and this movie is one of the better SCI-FI classics in the 1950's. This is a black and white movie and has some violence in it. The "Day the Earth Stood Still" starts out with a spacship being detected in the atmosphere and ends up landing in Washington on a ball diamond in a park area. The Alien(Klatu) exits the spacecraft and gets shot in the arm. Because of this, a robot then emerges and disables some of the military. Klatu after being hospitalized, escapes and resides with a family in an apartment. He becomes in good relationship with a small boy and his mother and to get a better feeling about Earth. There are several incidents with Klatu/robot with Klatu getting shot again. The mother then stops the robot from going on a rampage and destroying the Earth by saying the famous words in the movie "Klatu Verada Nicto" (excuse the spellings). Where the movie gets its name, Klatu stops everything from moving on Earth for an hour as a demenstration of alien power. At the end before Klatu leaves Earth, gives a final warning to all of Earth and the Scientists present. You will have to see the movie to find out what the warning is. I have also seen the remake of this movie which is just now out at the theaters(2008). I feel this older version is still better than the remake even though I did like the remake is some ways. The Plot and Acting, special effects are great in this original movie, and would recommend it to anyone that likes SCI-FI thrillers. ScifibufDT
