I was looking for a low cost digital camera with some telephoto abilities to carry on my Kayak. This camera is what I was looking for. Its small and light and easy to operate. The up loading is a snap. It was well worth the cost.

Walmart is in too much of a hurry on this request for my comments. I just recently purchased this camera and have not had much of a chance to use it so I can only provide my first impressions. 

I write articles for aviation magazines, and these magazines want high resolution photos, so I need a camera that is very compact that I can point and shoot without having to fool around with lenses.

I had been using a Vivitar ViviCam T016, but it broke, so I needed a replacement. This ViviCam S124 was relatively inexpensive, compared with the others on the market, and it is rated for 16 megapixels, compared to the T016, that was rated for 12.

These cameras do not come with a manual, so one must download it. The manual for this camera must have been written for an earlier version of this camera. For one thing, in the list of menus, there was one for Face Detect, but this menu is not available with this camera. The camera, however, does have the Face Detect feature.

Another discrepancy is that the manual says that the Vivitar Experience Image Manager Software Installation CD is included with the camera, but this software must be downloaded. I called Customer Service, and I was emailed the software. What I could have used, however, was a tutorial, because I had absolutely no idea as to what I was supposed to do with it. Fortunately, I have a friend who does professional photography, and he recently retired from a major hotel chain, where he was in charge of their computers. In other words, I had to go to someone with the knowledge of how to work with this. I never needed any type of software with any previous camera that I have ever used.

Regarding the manual, it does a poor job of explaining the features for each menu. Instead of explaining what each option on a menu does, it gives a very sketchy explanation, but it provides a dissertation on how one navigates through menu options. I could have never even seen a camera to know how to navigate through the menus, but for each menu, it repeats this detailed dissertation. What I needed, however, was an explanation. Since I really don't know what I'm doing, I select AUTO for most of the menus where it is available.

When it comes to explanations from Customer Service, it seems as though they cut & paste from the manual.

On my previous camera, there were three color options: Standard (color), Black & White, and Sephia. This camera added Vivid. I didn't know what to do with this. If Vivid is better than Standard, then why would one want to use Standard? My friend explained to me that I should use Standard for the type of shooting that I do.

Both of these Vivitars have a screen instead of a viewfinder, which is great for indoor use, but for outdoor shots, particularly from an airplane, there is too much glare, so I would prefer a simple viewfinder, as I had with my old Kodak Instamatic. With my previous Vivitar, I was still able to fly in the back seat of a formation team and get good shots of the other planes, in spite of the fact that I had to point and shoot, without being able to see anything in the screen except for glare.

As for the dimensions, this one takes up more space than my previous Vivitar, but this is due to the larger screen and the fact instead of building it into the camera, like other cameras, it has a swivel screen for the benefit of those who take selfies. I really don't need this capability, since I have a mirror, so I already know what I look like.

I plan on using the 16 MP setting, since it is the maximum resolution, just like I always used the 12 setting on my previous camera. I also used the NORMAL setting (although my friend has advised me that in the future, that I should use SUPER FINE). I took a few test photos, and I was surprised to see that with the 16 setting on this camera, that the kilobytes taken up were less than those taken with the previous camera with the 12 setting. I guess this means that this camera is compressing the photos. I would feel better with more kilobytes.

I will just have to wait to see how things work out, hoping that the magazines don't complain about the resolution.
