Connected with no problems. Worked perfectly. The software needs more options as to add to or sync. I not sure what it is doing. I see no option for that function. Get the largest you can afford as hard drives fill up quickly. I do a lot of home HD movies and need a back up for them. I had already filled up 2 250 GB drive as backups from the 500 GB drive as the main.

I bought this USB Hard Drive to expand the storage of my Dish DVR.
It was pretty easy to setup ... just power the drive on, plug the USB cable into the back of the Dish Receiver, and follow the directions on the screen ... the Drive will be re-formatted ... when formatting finishes the drive is ready to use.
Go to dish.com/support and follow the directions for Activating an External Hard Drive.
It works Great.

Very Good USB Hard Drive

I needed a Good dependable Backup Hard Drive, to run in the background while using my computer. This indeed fills those needs to the fullest. If my computer's Hard Drive ever crash's I can depend on it to replace all information that is lost. In the past WD Hard Drives have always served me well.

I had an older version of My Book that finally bit the dust, so I got a new one. The software works great- once you set it up it automatically backs up your files as you add or change them. It can be configured to keep several backup versions of each file, so if you corrupt or delete something important you can retrieve an older version. If you add a password, which you should, the whole backup section is encrypted. It just requires entering the password again every time you reboot the computer. You can add subfolders to the encrypted section of the drive, giving a lot of extra flexibility. I am not sure if you could boot up from it, but there is probably a way to do that too.

Painlessly backs up your data automatically

Bought as a gift. Delivered on time to my brother in Salem Oregon. Picked this external hard drive as a gift because I have bought similar Western Digital products for my own use and find them to be excellent.

Excellent product

I had purchased a WD 1TB external hard drive one year ago, and was totally satisfied with it.
Both of them were so very easy to hook up, and the first time your computer is turned on after installing the External hard drive, it automatically installed all the necessary drivers.
Plus: I have an XBox 360, and I have allowed the xbox to access my computer, and therefore access the external hard drive.
This is without a doubt one great deal. If you need storage space, want a virtually trouble free product, and an extremely consumer priced product, this is the way to go.

Compact, Easy to hook up, and lots of storage !!!

We have the Dish Network and use a DVR to record our programs. The DVR will only hold approx 100 hrs (you would think that would be enough). Dish recommends adding an external hard drive to expand your storage but it must meet certain specifications. The Western Digital My Book Essential with 2TB meets those specs. Walmart carries this product both online and in our local store. They had the best price too. I ordered it online and selected the ship-to-site (which saved shipping costs), then picked it up the next day with no waiting in line. The box had all the cables and power supply needed. I plugged it in and followed the instructions from the DVR. It works great! We can xfer recordings to it or watch from it. We are extremely happy with this product and would recommend it anyone with a DVR (check the specs for yours).

Works like it was designed

Satisfied with the drive so far..

It booted up and installed driver on my XP Computer. But didn't on Win 7 - my fault- I moved the Driver files to a sub folder and it couldn't find them on the Windows 7 Computer So had to go on line and download the driver files. Then installed and booted up like it was meant to do.good.

Work fine as intended.

When we shut the computer off, then power it back up, the Western Digital drive no longer appears. We must unplug the power from the hard drive, with the computer on, then plug the power back into the hard drive, to get it to work. We have to do this every time we use the computer.

Won't stay connected to computer

This item came with information already in it. Didn't have the software included and it can be purchased at store for $30. less than online. I returned it to Wal-Mart.
