You put your feet through their paces, so it’s important to keep them healthy and happy. This foot care guide will help you treat them right and always put your best foot forward.

Foot Care 101

The first step towards healthy feet is to keep them clean, dry, well moisturized and well-manicured. It seems easy enough, but everyone develops foot problems at some point. Common ailments include dry, cracked skin, blisters, calluses, warts and foot odour. Fortunately, when you're in need of a little sole salvation, there are plenty of simple remedies available that can provide relief and accelerate healing. If you suffer from foot fatigue, consider stretching, soaking and massaging your feet regularly. You should also ensure your socks and shoes fit well and feel comfortable. By pampering your feet with moisturizing foot lotions and balms, massages and regular pedicures, you can spot small problems before they grow into bigger problems, or prevent them from happening in the first place.

Dry, Cracked Feet

Dry, cracked skin can be painful and leave skin prone to infection. This condition is caused by everything from excessive bathing to extreme temperatures. For smoother, softer soles, hydrate your skin with foot creams and lotions containing moisturizing ingredients like lanolin, glycerin, hyaluronic acid and shea butter. If cracked heels are causing you discomfort, foot soaks containing urea can soften hardened skin. Exfoliate rough, thick or scaly skin regularly with pumice-based scrubs and a pumice stone, and treat your feet to repairing foot balms to restore them to their former glory.

Foot Odour

Good hygiene is the key to stamping out foot odour. To keep your feet looking and smelling their best, wash them daily in a foot bath with lukewarm water and soap. Afterwards, towel dry them well, making sure to get between your toes. Use a freshly scented foot spray, foot deodorant or anti-fungal foot powder on your feet and the insides of shoes to banish bacteria. Keep your feet dry and well ventilated in well-fitted shoes, and wear breathable cotton or sweat-wicking socks and odour-eating insoles to keep sweat at bay. 


From dancing the night away in heels to running a 5K race, we put our feet through a lot. Daily wear and tear, prolonged standing and uncomfortable shoes can cause painful blisters, which may burst and become infected. To sidestep blisters, shelve the stilettos and sandals and always wear socks or stockings. The best way to banish blisters is to apply blister treatments and blister cushions or plasters. This will help prevent infection from dirt and bacteria and accelerate healing. Blister gels and heel cushions and liners also help reduce pressure on blistered areas and protect blister-prone areas from further friction. 

Corns and Calluses

From poorly fitting footwear to prolonged walking or running, excessive friction can rub your feet the wrong way and cause calluses and corns. This thickening of the skin can develop on your toes, where they're known as corns, and on the bottoms or sides of your feet as calluses. In both cases, you're likely to experience pain and discomfort. Keep corns and calluses from cramping your style by wearing comfortable socks, shoes and insoles, while also moisturizing and exfoliating your feet regularly. If corns and calluses develop, soak them and rub with a pumice stone or use medicated corn cushions, corn removers, callus filers or callus removers. Pumice-based scrubs and foot creams containing urea can help break down calluses.

Ingrown Toenails and Hangnails

Ingrown toenails and hangnails can cause pain to your tender tootsies and lead to redness, swelling and infection. To help prevent these painful conditions, be sure to keep your toenails well pedicured. Here are some tips on caring for your feet and toenails:
• Cut or file your nails straight across (never shorter than your toe) and file any rough edges.
• Invest in a nail grooming kit, complete with nail clippers, scissors and a rounded nail file or emery board, to ensure regular nail care
• Soak your feet in an Epsom salt foot bath to reduce inflammation caused by ingrown nails and hangnails

Athlete’s Foot and Foot Fungus

If your feet are hibernating in winter boots, the hot, damp and dark conditions can be the formula for foot fungus. Fungal infections like athlete’s foot can inflame the skin and cause itching, burning and odour. Discoloured or thickened nails and peeling or scaling on the soles can be signs of a fungal infection. To fend off foot fungus, keep your feet (especially your toes) clean and dry, and change your shoes and socks regularly. Antifungal treatments in the form of creams, liquids, powders and sprays or athlete’s foot spray powder can help treat athlete’s foot. However, if the problem persists, see a podiatrist for prescription-strength remedies.

Heel Pain

Heel pain from heel spurs or plantar fasciitis can knock you off your feet, but these simple remedies may help you get up and going again.
• Buy different styles of comfy, well-fitting shoes and change them throughout the day when appropriate (For example, swap workplace heels for sneakers for your daily commutes.)
• Wear arch supports, orthotics, heel liners and heel and foot cushions that cradle your arches to provide support and reduce pressure
• Pamper your feet with a foot massager to ease the pain
• Try rest, ice, and over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications for pain relief
See a doctor if the pain persists for longer than a week or becomes unmanageable.

Foot Fatigue

If you’re on the go from dawn until dusk, your feet may have trouble keeping up with you. Foot fatigue is experienced as aches, cramps and swelling in the balls, arches or heels of your foot. This condition has a range of causes, including poor circulation and prolonged activity. To give your feet a break, wear supportive shoes with orthotics, foot cushions or massaging insoles and take frequent rests. Stretch, ice and massage your feet morning and night with a foot massager to relax your muscles. Wake up tired feet with Epsom salts or effervescent foot soaks infused with circulation-boosting ingredients, such as peppermint, pine, camphor or rosemary.

Plantar Warts

Be careful where you walk barefoot. Public showers, locker rooms and pools can be the perfect breeding ground for the viruses that cause plantar warts. These viruses enter the skin at cuts or pressure points. Once there, they create round, crater-like warts that can appear on your soles and cause pain when you walk. To prevent plantar warts, avoid walking barefoot on warm, moist surfaces, wear shower shoes in public areas and keep your feet dry. To get rid of them, use plantar wart remover, avoid touching warts and keep them covered with cushioned pads, bandages or athletic tapeto avoid spreading the virus.
