Sensitive Skin 101
Sensitive skin can run the range of dry and flaky patches, to burning and stinging rashes, and even acne breakouts. Treating sensitive skin or preventing flare-ups can be tricky if your skin is easily irritated, but there are a few things you can do to help keep your skin happy and calm. These everyday tips are here to help you put your best face forward, and to keep your skin looking and feeling its best.
1. Patch test new products
The allure of the latest and greatest beauty products can be hard to ignore. After all, a new miracle moisturizer or anti-aging serum always sounds promising. Before you commit to anything, take time to patch test any new cosmetics to make sure they’re suitable for your skin. Simply pick a small patch of skin that’s out of sight, like behind your ear, and dab on some of the product. After 24 hours, check for any flare-ups, redness, or irritation.
2. Don’t over-clean
It’s important to keep your skin clean, regardless of skin type. However, if you have sensitive skin, it’s just as important that you don’t over-clean. Common mistakes include washing with water that’s too hot, and exfoliating too often or with something that’s too harsh. Washing your face twice a day should be enough — once in the morning, and once at night. Try using a gentle cleanser, or something formulated especially for sensitive skin.
3. Moisturize like you mean it
Moisturizer is an important part of any skin care routine, especially if you have sensitive skin. It helps to lock in moisture while creating a protective barrier against environmental factors, like pollution and wind. You should moisturize every time you wash your face to replenish some of the moisture stripped away by your cleanser. When shopping for a moisturizer, look for one that’s free of fragrances and parabens (preservatives used in many cosmetics). Both of these can irritate your skin. Remember: if it’s your first time using it, test a small patch of skin first.
4. Get smart with SPF
We all know that a little sun can be good, but a lot of sun is definitely bad. The last thing your sensitive skin needs is a harsh burn, so it’s important to always shield your skin with sunscreen. Remember, sun protection isn’t limited to summer. If you’re hitting the slopes or spending time outside on a bright winter day, it’s just as important to protect your skin. Similar to moisturizers, look for fragrance-free and paraben-free formulas, and always re-apply after sweating or swimming. Not only will you protect yourself from an irritating burn, you’ll also help prevent premature aging, discolouration, and skin cancer.
5. Nourish your skin from the inside
It’s true that you are what you eat, and what you eat can make a big difference in your skin — regardless of skin type. Healthy skin isn’t just a matter of what products you use; it’s also a matter of diet and exercise. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water each day, eat a balanced diet, and make time to exercise. Your overall health will benefit from the inside out.
