What are hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids, or piles, may cause no symptoms but can sometimes be very itchy and uncomfortable. What exactly are they? Simply put, they are swollen blood vessels in the anal canal. Hemorrhoids can develop inside the rectum (internal), or appear around the anus (external). While they can be uncomfortable and embarrassing, hemorrhoids are not usually serious.
The most common symptoms of hemorrhoids include:
  • Bleeding during bowel movements
  • Itching and some discharge in your underwear
  • Rectal pain (for external hemorrhoids)
Almost everyone will experience hemorrhoids at some time in their lives. However, there are things you can do to reduce the chance you’ll get hemorrhoids.

What causes hemorrhoids?

Anything that places too much pressure on the veins of the rectum or anus can lead to hemorrhoids:
  • Sitting on the toilet too long
  • Straining during a bowel movement (either from diarrhea or constipation)
  • Pregnancy
  • Heavy lifting
  • Being overweight
  • Any activity that causes you to strain
Did you know that hemorrhoids are passed down from previous generations?

Reduce your risk of hemorrhoids

You can reduce your risk of getting hemorrhoids by following these handy tips:
  • Fill up on fiber: Eat more fruits, vegetables and whole grains to help avoid constipation
  • Stop the strain: Don’t strain when you are in the bathroom!
  • Don’t skip the urge: one of the major causes of straining and constipation is people avoiding the urge to go to the bathroom. Never delay the urge to go.
  • Make it quick: Don’t sit on the toilet for too long; don’t take a magazine in with you.
  • Quench your thirst: Aim to drink 8 glasses of water every day to stay hydrated

How are hemorrhoids treated?

If you’re unlucky enough to get hemorrhoids, there is a wide range of over-the-counter products that can help bring relief:
  • Creams, ointments and gels: Can help reduce swelling, and relieve pain and itching
  • Suppositories: Reduce internal swelling, and soothe burning, itching and discomfort
  • Wipes: Cleansing, soothing wipes for use after bowel movements
  • Fibre supplements and stool softeners: Make it easier to empty the bowels

Practice good hygiene

When you have hemorrhoids, good hygiene is more important than ever. After every bowel movement:
  • Bathe the area gently using soft, moist toilet paper, a hemorrhoids wipe or even an unscented baby wipe.
  • Avoid a lot of wiping – you may want to take a sitz bath, or have a bath or shower instead.
  • Dry the area gently with a soft, clean cloth or towel.
