Performer Notes: <ul><li>The man looking out from the cover of The Tree of Forgiveness is 71 years old and just a bit worse for wear. He clearly has his wits about him, but he probably has little use for wasting time or needless effort. He's been around the block a few times, and has some stories to tell if you're willing to sit down and listen. The man's voice is a nearly perfect match for the face: not as strong as it was in his youth, but still boasting enough spunk to make himself heard when he feels like it. The Tree of Forgiveness is John Prine's first collection of original material since 2005's Fair & Square, and in many respects it sounds casual and easygoing, as if Prine and his pals could have cut it in his living room in a few afternoons. But even when he cut his debut album in 1971, Prine never exactly sounded young, and the high mileage that's so much a part of The Tree of Forgiveness seems to suit him and these songs. The rueful tone of "Summer's End" and "I Have Met My Love Today" has been deepened by the relative fragility of Prine's instrument, and he sounds rascally when he spins tales like "Egg & Daughter Nite, Lincoln Nebraska, 1967 (Crazy Bone)" and "The Lonesome Friends of Science," engaging in lively wordplay that belies his years. And with producer Dave Cobb overseeing the sessions, The Tree of Forgiveness strikes a welcome balance between an informal guitar pull and a late-night meeting around the campfire where the volume may be low but the investment in the material is high. The Tree of Forgiveness never sounds forced, but Cobb and his crew have drawn out Prine in a way that uses his age as an asset, not a drawback. And while you can't ignore Prine's septuagenarian status on these recordings, the closer, "When I Get to Heaven," suggests he's given mortality plenty of thought and is totally at ease with it. If Buffy Sainte-Marie has a trademark as an artist it's that she doesn't give a damn what anybody thinks. Since 1964, she has fought to make the records she wants and has seldom allowed the vision of her producers or record labels to sway her intentions. She doesn't fit the mold of a "folksinger" as a septuagenarian any better than she did 50 years ago. Power in the Blood, her first new recording since 2008, is another highly individual statement from Sainte-Marie the artist and activist. Recorded in Toronto with three different producers -- Michael Wojewoda, Chris Birkett, and Jon Levine -- the album offers new material, reworkings of a few older songs, and choice covers. Among the latter is the militant title track by Alabama 3 that incorporates samples from the original with some new words by Sainte-Marie delivered in her declamatory style, with Birkett's urgent bass, drum loops, and pulsing synths urging her on. Her reading of UB40's "Sing Our Own Song" is introduced by a Cree chant, popping snare, and funky B-3. Set opener "It's My Way," the title cut from her 1964 debut, has been thoroughly re-visioned here. It's still a folk song, but Sainte-Marie pushes hard at the boundaries of the term's definition. Strident acoustic guitars introduce the track, but when she begins singing, dropped basslines, explosive kick drums, tom-toms, cello, and treated electric guitars offer its timeless message anew. The bluesy, post-psych rock in "Not the Loving Kind" (which first appeared on 1972's Moon Shot) is juxtaposed against a punchy R&B horn chart. Of the new songs, the hypnotic trip-hop groove in "Love Charms (Mojo Bijoux)," with its shuffle, shimmer, and slip, is fit for the club floor. A set standout, it is as steamy as it is romantic. The waltz "Ke Sakihitin Awasis (I Love You, Baby)" is simpler, more atmospheric. Although it's a sensual love song, it is for the globe's indigenous people. "The Uranium War" is a prequel to her celebrated "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee." What begins as a meandering parlor song with a journalistic accounting of circumstances surrounding the murder of activist Ana Marie Aquash, its strident backing chorus transforms it into a chant for justice. Closer "Carry It On" is the album's anthem. Punchy guitars, insistent keyboards, and rolling drums support Sainte-Marie's soaring lead and massive chorus vocals. They exhort listeners to celebrate life and the earth, even during periods of trial and darkness. Power in the Blood's stylistic adventure and restless aesthetic spirit are indeed Sainte-Marie's hallmarks. But on their own, musical and sonic diversity do not a fine album make. It takes good songs and inspired performances to balance the equation, and this album has them all. ~ Thom Jurek

In 2002, Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot suffered life-threatening injuries that put him out of commission for a while. Ever the trooper, he gathered voice-and-guitar tracks he'd recorded just before his illness and oversaw their production from his sickbed. Though the band was overdubbed long after Lightfoot's singing, HARMONY congeals surprisingly well. Whether out of necessity or choice, the production is considerably leaner than that of Lightfoot's many '70s hits, focusing around acoustic guitar and colored mainly by modest keyboard and electric guitar tracks that sublimate themselves to the songs' purpose. The album is filled out by a couple of live tracks of the same vintage, displaying Lightfoot's faultless knack for capturing an audience. Mellow, thoughtful, and tasteful, HARMONY holds up Lightfoot's legacy in admirable fashion.

If there's a gold standard for fiddling in American music, it's Mark O'Connor, an artist who has earned his stripes as one of the finest instrumentalists in bluegrass, country, jazz, and classical. Given how far he's pushed the boundaries of his music and his instrument, it's just a bit surprising that he's opted to dip his toes into one of the most traditional formats in bluegrass, the family band, but you can't argue much with the results. Released in 2016, Coming Home is the first album from the O'Connor Band, which along with Mark features his wife Maggie O'Connor on violin, his son Forrest O'Connor on mandolin and vocals, and his daughter-in-law Kate Lee on violin and vocals. (Friends of the family Joe Smart on guitar and Geoff Saunders on bass fill out the arrangements.) While three fiddlers might seem like overkill, this group manages to merge them seamlessly, sounding like a tiny orchestra on "Fishers Hornpipe," weaving gracefully through the title track, and bringing their voices together in sweet sorrow on "Fiddler Going Home." The guitar and mandolin lend the melodies a fine rhythmic counterpoint, and the group's harmonies are excellent. Mark O'Connor is clearly the star of this show, but his bandmates are more than capable, and Forrest O'Connor and Kate Lee are fine lead vocalists who season the group's instrumental blend with impressive skill. While some of Lee's songwriting leans a bit hard on pop-country tropes, the musicians more than compensate, and the material moves back and forth between traditionalism and contemporary bluegrass styles with easy authority. Coming Home is a splendid set of modern-day bluegrass with deep Appalachian soul, and proof that there's a lot of talent in the O'Connor household besides the guy with the hat. ~ Mark Deming

Buffy Sainte-Marie Soldier Blue: The Best of the Vanguard Years CD. Although this is for the most part a good compilation of material from Buffy Sainte-Marie's most prominent decade as a recording artist (1964-1973), there are a couple problems that keep this from being as definitive an overview of the era as a single-disc anthology should be. First, it's a bit on the short side, with 15 songs and 50 minutes of playing time. Second, it inexplicably omits one of her most famous songs, "Until It's Time for You to Go." Otherwise, much of her very best and most renowned early work is here, including "Universal Soldier," "Now That the Buffalo's Gone," "Cod'ine," "My Country; 'Tis of Thy People You're Dying," and "Little Wheel Spin and Spin." With so much Vanguard material to choose from, any best-of selection beyond the handful of most famous songs is bound to be debatable, but the covers of Neil Young's "Helpless" and Joni Mitchell's "(He Played Real Good) For Free" are idiosyncratic selections (Mitchell's "The Circle Game," also included, carries some historical weight as one of the first prominent Mitchell covers, released in 1967 before Joni herself had issued a version). As a whole, it is a good representation of Sainte-Marie's Vanguard period, with politically conscious folk songs, more elaborately produced early-'70s tracks, country ("I'm Gonna Be a Country Girl Again"), and a couple haunting pieces from her most adventurous album, 1969's Illuminations. The Best of the Vanguard Years is a superior compilation, however, including 25 songs, among them "Until It's Time for You to Go." ~ Richie Unterberger

The process of creating Breaking the Thermometer to Hide the Fever included listening to countless archival recordings of interviews by Radio Haiti's journalists, and McCalla specifically wrote "Fort Dimanche" after listening to a testimonial interview that Michele Montas - the prominent former journalist and station director at Radio Haiti - had conducted with a survivor of Duvalier's political prison. In the interview, the man outlined his living conditions, the daily terror and torture that these political prisoners were subjected to and the events that led to his arrest. This album is a soundtrack of sorts to the theatre piece, featuring the songs that Leyla McCalla wrote and performs in this work. McCalla's beautiful vocals are described by The New York Times as, "Her voice is disarmingly natural... her magnificently transparent music holds tidings of family, memory, solitude and the inexorability of time: weighty thoughts handled with the lightest touch imaginable.
