What are amiibo?

If you have kids, you probably already know that toys-to-life (TTL) is a ‘thing.’ This specific category of toys features figures that interact with compatible video games, thanks to embedded NFC chips. Nintendo’s take on the category, called amiibo, adds both unique entertainment elements and value. These accessories come in the form of figures and cards, and work across many games for Nintendo systems.

How do they work?

You can use amiibo with both the Wii U home console and the Nintendo 3DS family of handheld systems.

On the Wii U console, when a compatible amiibo is tapped on the near field communication (NFC) reader embedded into every Wii U GamePad controller, the chip is ‘read’ by the system. When that happens, your amiibo will open new gameplay options, depending on the game. Your amiibo might bring a character into your game, unlock new content, give you costumes or power-ups—and more!

This amiibo functionality is also built into the New Nintendo 3DS XL systems. Insert a compatible game, then simply tap an amiibo to the lower screen and go! And, if you have a Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo 3DS XL or Nintendo 2DS system, you can use amiibo via the Nintendo 3DS NFC Reader/Writer accessory (sold separately).

How are amiibo different?

amiibo figures can be used in multiple games—they’re not just tied to a single title. Different compatible games use amiibo in different ways. And when you use amiibo with the Wii U console or New Nintendo 3DS XL system, there’s no need to purchase a separate NFC portal—which saves you money.
