When the throttle valve is quickly closed, the air flow is rapidly reduced, resulting in unstable flow and pressure fluctuations. The surge will eventually cause the high load associated with it and cause the thrust bearing to fail. The blow-off valve uses a combination of multiple pressure signals and spring force to detect when the throttle is closed.
