I bought my Garmin FR 970 in January 2026 and it is a great watch. I previously had a Garmin Venu 2, which was good, but I'm really enjoying the additional data, features, and accuracy that I get with this watch. Automatic HRV tracking data and the training readiness feature were key reasons that I upgraded. But I've also noticed that it more accurately tracks my sleep data, so I get much better insights into my overall health and training readiness, which increases my confidence in how I approach each day.

I’ve used a lot of running watches over the years, and I can honestly say the Forerunner 970 is on a completely different level. This isn’t just an upgrade — it feels like Garmin finally put everything serious runners actually need into one device without compromising comfort or usability.

From the first run, you can tell this watch was built for performance. The data isn’t just impressive — it’s actionable. Training load, readiness, HRV trends, recovery insights, race predictions — everything feels purposeful. It’s not just throwing numbers at you; it actually helps you make smarter decisions about your training.

The build quality is excellent. It’s lightweight, comfortable for long runs, and the display is crisp and easy to read in any condition. It feels premium without being bulky. Battery life is outstanding — I don’t have to think about charging constantly, which is a huge plus when you’re training consistently.

The training experience is seamless. Structured workouts are intuitive, intervals are easy to follow, and long runs feel fully supported by the metrics. It genuinely feels like having a performance lab on your wrist. The ECG feature is also a great addition — it adds an extra layer of health awareness without complicating the core running functionality.

Overall, this watch is not just for tracking miles — it’s a serious performance tool. If you’re committed to improving and training with intention, the Forerunner 970 absolutely delivers. I would buy it again without hesitation.

970 Is Not a Watch — It’s a Weapon

I loved my Ultra 2 and I first I wasn’t too sure if I was going to like switching to Garmin, but it was the best decision! I’m in love with my Garmin 🫶🏽

Best switch from Apple to Garmin

Replaces my Fenix 6S Pro which served me well for years until it didn’t (gps got wonky) and was out of warranty and settings tinkering didn’t fix the jumpy recordings (location and pace). 

This beast of a watch works like a charm. It has all the bells and whistles, all of which are FABULOUS. The most underrated feature is the light. I thought it was totally lame, and use it several times per week. 

I got the white watch with yellow peakaboo band. 
I was thought it might look funky, which I was ok with. It looks GREAT for daily wear to work- I like to keep my looks professional and manicured. It doesn’t really show its funky vibe to anyone other than me. 

I am ROUGH on my gear- I wear my watch 24/7 except charging. I wear it running, throwing around the kids soccer gear, through home projects, trail running. It looks gorgeous. The white still is white and not grimy.

I initially bought the 165, then the 265, (returned both) then finally got the 970. I’m a casual runner picking up more miles throughout the week (10-15) but hoping to increase more. There are features about this watch I didn’t think were important til I had them, such as the flashlight! Came in handy on a run club this week now that it’s getting darker earlier. Such a beautiful watch too and the face is the perfect size.

Worth it!

purchased this watch after wanting it since it’s release. Prior to this watch I would use an Apple Watch Ultra 2. The battery life on the forerunner is amazing compared to the Apple Watch which needed to be charged every night. I use my watch mainly for tracking my runs and also triathlon training. 10/10 features for what I use it for.

Great Watch

I bought this watch about a month ago, upgrading from the venu 3S and I'm so happy I did. There are so many things I could highlight about this watch, from the AMOLED screen, to the sleep tracking but the thing I love most is the Garmin coach. It genuinely feels like I have a 'coach' when following the running plan - it takes into account my sleep, additional workouts and automatically updates my scheduled workouts. I have also loved the performance score even more, it's allowed me to slow down and really enjoy the training process! First forerunner but definitely not my last!!

Incredible!

My husband bought it for me about 3 weeks ago and I love it! I am used to trying to keep track of my running time on a stopwatch on my old apple watch but this does it for me. Tracks how far I have ran, the time, and all great features I was looking for in a watch. I love the fact that I don't have to buy a training program it's tailored to my own personal stats.

Pretty nice

the screens were initially way too dim to read outside. I read all the help docs, user guides, etc and adjusted all settings to no avail. I was going to call Garmin support but they were closed, so I googled again and found a reddit group that said to resintall the software. that worked and now it is bright and legible outside. if I had not had to do all this, I'd give it a 5. A brand new expensive watch should work out of the box. Looking forward to testing the battery life for long workouts and events ahead.

Once I reinstalled the sw, it's been great

Overall, this is a great watch—just like its predecessors. Unfortunately, the battery life doesn’t live up to expectations. It’s advertised to last 17 days, but I’ve never managed more than 7 before needing to recharge—or worse, it randomly dies with over 10% remaining (which has happened several times on the trail). I’ve even turned off multiple features, but it hasn’t made much difference in battery performance.

Great features • Poor battery life

Touchlock on but off in settings. Had that problem with enduro 3 also. You love to charge crasy ammount of cash, but dont know how to fix bugs in expencive watches. My next watch will not be garmin praise the lord. Had problems with instinct 3 also- making intervals and watch going off all the time. You gave us update but problem is here again. Had faulty button on epix pro. Bunch of lags on all watches. You are crasy with pricing. Amazfit is catching you, coros also, and I am glad for that. 970 will be better in years, but, you will abandone it than, so... no good. Had bunch of problems with your watches. You selling this problems for people who dont even run, just wearing them for walks and showing off. For serious athlete I dont want to deal with your bugs all the time.
