I put it together by myself but it said you need two people. The only thing I wasn't crazy about was the back board which I think is almost like cardboard only white like my bookcase, I saw someone else said they bought boarding and put it on the back which I think one day I will do. I already have it filled up and I spend more money just going to the store for groceries in one trip then this bookcase cost me...

Maybe if you're the kind of person who can afford a real wood book shelf this will be a disappointing buy, but for those of us who actually need to shop at places like WalMart, this is an exceptional product. For a DIY particle and laminate book shelf it is really sturdy, being secured by 12 heavy-duty screws at top and bottom and on the fixed shelf, over 60 nails in the backing, and the cross pieces which add a classy finish as well as durability. For one person alone the assembly is pretty labor-intensive, but it can still be done and probably in an hour or two tops with minimal tools or know-how. All of the screw holes are pre-tapped, extra hardware is included, and the pictographic instructions are easy to follow. The only real potential for frustration is nailing on the back straight. I did have some issues with shipping, but nothing that seemed indicative of more than a one-time problem and it did serve to highlight how well packaged this product is. Even with the obvious mistreatment of my package, the pieces didn't get a scratch in the well-stacked, tightly shrinkwrapped, and padded box.

The only real con- barely- is that there is some very minor bowing to the shelves at well above the recommended capacity, but there is no indication that will get any worse or that they will give out. Even without the wall bracket (also included and recommended) the shelf is well-balanced and true, does not lean even against the wall and on carpet.

Exceeded Expectations by a long shot!

This is the third bookcase I purchased from this manufacturer. I like the extra trim piece at the top. It makes the bookcase look a little more finished. Also the side pieces are one full piece which makes it easier to put together and I believe a much sturdier bookcase. I purchase the white ones as I like to mix and match the sizes to create a larger wall unit. I use them for collectibles, my TV and VCR/DVD player, books, and movie storage. I bolt the multiple bookcases together and I always attach them to the wall stud to be sure they don't fall over. The manufacturer always includes enough hardware and usually supply a few extra pieces. Packaging is great as all corners of the bookcases have a cardboard corner cover so when you cut the box open with a knife you don't have to worry about cutting your boards. The only drawback to any shelving made of particle board is that the shelves will not remain flat with heavy items on them. The shelves will tend to bow. All in all I have been very pleased with the product.

I purchased the white bookcases as I mix and match

While I was aware that this was not a solid wood bookcase, my experience with items from this manufacturer have been good, so I knew what to expect. It is a great piece (we actually bought a 5, 4 AND 3 shelf bookcase) and is doing exactly what we had expected it to do.

You probably dont want to load every shelf with a lot of weight, but we keep all of the heaviest books and binders on the bottom shelf or two and other pictures, books, etc. on the higher ones. No problems to date!

Assembly is quick - only about 20-30 mins

Great Buy!

My husband put this shelf together pretty easily--in an hour or less. Not too hard. The product itself is VERY heavy. It was delivered to our porch, and I had to carefully slide it into the house and lay it on it's side to wait for my husband to lift it--would not have been able to lift it by myself. Seems pretty sturdy, and we can fit all the books/decor we needed on it. We have 3 other shelves like it from years passed…our experience is that they last 5-8 years, and then the shelves start to bow or break (we do keep the shelves packed full with kids books and other heavy books…perhaps if the shelves were not full, it would last longer). If you move the shelves too many times, the nails to keep the thin shelf backing will start to come out easier over time…just push them back in, or secure with new nails. If you're looking for an inexpensive shelf that looks nice and works well, I really recommend it…just know by 7-10 years, you may need to replace it. If you're looking for something that will last a lifetime--find something that is hardwood, and probably more expensive.

Looks good, does the job for inexpensive furniture

For just $70-ish ship to store it is a very good buy. If you expect solid wood at that price then good luck finding it. Instructions were not that bad if you have ever built a model kit then you are good. I used some Elmer's wood glue during construction and it is solid as a rock. The cherry color is very nice and a great match to my bed which is solid wood. The back is of the thick pressed cardboard style and it comes folded into three sections. that is the only complaint for me as the center folds stay slightly 'bowed' out and not flat. But that is better than three separate sections for the back in my opinion. I also used Elmer's wood glue to help the nails provided keep the back in place.
They did ship it Fed-Ex to the store and the box corners did arrive kinda beat up but the packing kept everything inside in good shape.
Thinking about buying another to keep my books and my 2 young boy's toys in easy reach.

Pretty good buy...worth the money...

First. This is not high quality furniture. The 4 stars are for an inexpensive, good looking, sturdy, temporary piece of furniture that is very easy to assemble.I got the three units of 3, 4, @ 5 for a quick  craft room setup. It has a beautiful presentation. Best thing I love was  the heavy laminated units were delivered free to my front door by Walmart. It's will not be passed down to family but gives me an inexpensive good looking room FAST.

Good inexpensive furniture that will do the job.

I have 4 south shore book cases, two 5-shelf and two 4-shelf. They go together pretty fast and with little effort. Reasonably sturdy for a cheap book case, but the shelves do sag just a little when loaded with books as you can see in the photo. They are functionally attractive. The back is cardboard, the shelf pins are plastic, and the price is great. I built a 5-shelf bookcase and it cost me $75 in materials and took hours to cut, paint and assemble. Very sturdy, however. I'm going to purchase 2 more of the south shore 5-shelf units so I obviously can recommend them. I am going to use hardboard for the back and nail it to every shelf, adding about $10 to the cost of each one. If you're looking at bookshelves in this price range then look no further, these will do the job.

Basic Bookcase does its job

I bought this bookcase online after seeing that the $30 bookcases no longer were solid sided. All the new, cheaper bookcases at Walmart,Kmart, etc., all have split sides that makes them not 5 foot- but two 30" sections with a plastic strip covering the joint on each side. I have record albums, vinyl, over a 40 year old collection of some 250 that I needed shelf space for. In a cross country move I sold the Kmart 5ft bookcase I bought in 2002 for $32. Upon moving in I found I needed one just like it to store my collection. I realized that the composite shelves that can't handle weight in the middle meant again putting albums at each end of a shelf rather than all the way across- like 30 albums on each side of shelves. But I know that in advace from experience. It does costs more to have solid, full length sides instead of the "hidden" stack, but who wants top shelves falling off because something is cheaply made? It's fairly easy to put together- don't let the package weight of 70 lbs throw you- and don't put heavy stuff in the middle of shelves. Follow that, and you'll have a beautiful full size bookcase that will hold quite a bit of weight if it's evenly distributed and last for years.

Stability at a price

We purchased 4 of these bookcase shelves to set up more book room in our upstairs. These shelves fit the bill perfectly, especially for the price. No, they arent great furniture, but for 64.00 a piece they are worth it. First of all they are very easy to put together, most every piece was cut the same from bookcase to bookcase. So lining up all 4 side by side, they look very uniform.

Most every piece has some kind of finishing flaw or blemish, but they can be touched up with a furniture marker. They are well packed, and Walmart did very well in shipping them to the store for me. Yes, they are heavy in the box. I managed to carry each one into the house by myself, but I would recommend 2 people to carry the box inside.

Overall Im very happy with the purchase.

For the price, these are great shelves

I am truly sorry, this has been a bad experience for me. I ordered two bookcases on line. They arrived promptly, and when a friend came over to my new place to assemble them, we found out that I got the wrong parts. Not in one packet, but in both. I was supposed to get a G and G1 for the two sides of the bookcase, but instead I got two G1 parts, in both packets! So, we could not assemble either one. Now I am waiting for a person with a truck to help me take them to the local Wallmart store for return, because the packets are big, and they don't fit in my car.
I will not buy furniture from Wallmart again, because this has been a difficult experience.

Bad experience
