Can be rich and neutral, but also unpleasantly strong or chemical.

This black gel food color is wonderful for hard candy, rolled fondant and cookie icing. You do need to use a lot - my recipe for 1 pound of hard candy required 1 1/2 tsp of gel to create a solid black - but the container has more than enough for the job. This may not be a great choice for buttercream icing - the powdered sugar and shortening would create a "grey" icing, but if you started with chocolate buttercream, you could make a good solid black for decorating cakes.

We made a Stranger Things gingerbread house this year to celebrate the last season of ST. Needed a black food coloring and this one really performed well. We had white frosting so I like that you can add the color slowly to make a gray or a black. It's thick, so you need a small utensil to spoon it out. Unfortunately the website wouldn't allow me to upload a photo, the house turned out adorable with black vines, and a "gate" on the front.

I've used this to marinate chicken wings into bat wings, made black vodka and numerous other recipes for Halloween. The perfect product at the perfect price.

Halloween

Getting a true black icing can be so tricky but Wilton makes it easy. This gel is incredibly concentrated so you don't have to use the whole jar to get a deep dark color. Best of all it doesn't thin out your icing or leave a weird bitter aftertaste. Highly recommend for cake decorating!

Perfect deep black color

I wasn't sure if it would be a dark black or not but was hoping it was and ended up being pleasantly surprised. It dyed my fingers a bit so be careful or wear gloves if you are concerned about that otherwise I definitely recommend this food dye.

was probably the closest to perfect trying to add black. used it to make grey for my daughters pusheen cupcakes. The only reason im giving it 4 out of 5 is it was a little messy to use and it WILL stain tools that are light color a slight purple.

I had to use practically the whole container for the icing for one cake to make it black. It had an overpowering chemical taste. it ruined the whole cake. I do not recommend this product.

Awful, awful product.  Very thick and difficult to use.  When added to any white frosting, it turns purple.  When added to any other icing, it thickens it so much that it's impossible to use.  And the taste is overwhelming and unpleasant.

I mixed it with some frosting to decorate my cupcakes, they looked pretty but had a metallic taste, no one would eat my cupcakes
