Made not over sweet ,adding less than the recommended amount of sugar to custard powder, I find is best with a sweet pud, or stewed fruit.Not over thick, or as you prefer.Please don't 'improve ' this brand as is still as good as ever it was.The bought ready made ones are so incredibly sweet.My family love this custard too.Not difficult to make, either, once done a couple of times.Just remember to stir until boiling,(once you've added the pre stirred & dissolved custard powder, plus sugar before hand),& keep stirring for only a short time for best results,with a wooden spoon until bubbling all over.If left it will boil over.l always pop a large spoon in the jug to take the custard off the boil before pouring in,& leave the pan to soak in hot water. The skin, if it forms on the bottom , later.So much easier to clean this way.The skin on the bottom,if any, usually just peels off easily.Just make like 'double cream' thickness for trifle, by adding the recommended amount of powder to milk on the packet.We like it more like thin cream, so use a bit more milk than in recipe.Leave some to cool for the next day & it re heats well, if any left over.

Try using Sucralose sweetener instead of sugar and skimmed milk. It tastes just as nice, but not naughty.

I double the amount of powder it states, but it makes great custard. I now use almond milk so it's dairy free, tastes good but not quite as bright in colour.

We regularly have Bird's custard with our dessert.  However, the disappointment is that it is very difficult to buy the larger tub (600gr). None of the supermarkets seem to stock it. I cannot understand why as this custard powder is the best you can get and buying in the large tub is far more economical.

Bought this but it talks about cooking on the "hob" and I also found the directions made a very and I mean very thin sauce. On the internet (not the can) it says for a thicker sauce double the powder. Making a thicker sauce will make you go through this can very fast. I prefer Harry Hornes.
